I just had a trip to the pet store to pick up some feeder fish and a bag of gerty guinea pig food. Well I went to a different pet store this time, and realized they dont sell gerty guinea pig food. But I found another guinea pig food that sounded pretty yummy. I used gerty food as kind something to mix it up a bit instead of their typical pellets (Id throw in a bit every couple of days into their bowls. ) This new stuff has some stuff in it that Probably means I cant give it as often..but I was thinking maybe once or twice a week. Let me know what you guys think please. Im pretty sure everything in it is okay for them.
Its VitaNature natural timothy formula guinea pig food by Vitakraft. (balanced high fiber diet for all life stages)
Grains, seeds and cones carob pods, pine cones, wheat, rolled oats, barley and flax seed
herbs and flowers calendula, parsley, chamomile and leaves of dandelion, raspberry, and peppermint
fruits and vegetables garden peas, carrots, cranberries, rose hips, leeks and beet root.
theres obviously other things in it, but nothing I think is that important to mention (other than cane molasses, but thats only in the pellets...which i can probably just pick out.)
but let me know if this all sounds okay to you. I dont see anything that worries me THAT much. But I've also been wrong before =]
thanks guys!

I can't find it online for the full stats, but you'd need to pick out the pine cones, and there are quite a few sweet things in there that you might need to pick out or distribute evenly - carob, carrots, cranberries, rose hips and beetroot. If it lists molasses, that will probably be in all the pellets. Will there be much left? Someone found this food in Petsmart lately, it sounds better: www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12339119&lmdn=Pet+Type

What's wrong with the pine cones? I thought they could have those? And I'll take a look at the other stuff

I don't need another type of pellet. I use this www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=16626As their main diet (this is the only degu food available where I live.. I'm surprised there is even this!) I was just looking for something that I can throw in every now and then to "play it up" a bit. I have a flower medley treat they get occasionally... And a seed mix every once in a blue moon. And the occasional millet bite. But I was looking for some other yummy thing I could give them. This has stuff in it that I haven't been able to find in other stores seperately. Ideally I'd like to go along with the all natural diet, but it's something I'm hesitant about (with not fully comprehending what they NEED, what they SHOULDN'T have etc)

I'm very confused about the pine cone thing though. I thought they could have these??? I have bought them pine cones from the pet store before as something to chew on. And they enjoyed them without any noticeable side effects?

I guess because untreated pine wood is harmful to them . . . as well as the needles . . . I myself assume that the cones can't be good either. I've never actually checked much to see if they have sap in them . . . and most of what we have near us are spruce trees . . . but I would be leary of them myself.

Well now I feel like an idiot lol I must have been misinformed or just misread somewhere that they were okay. Well I'll be sure to remove what I already have in there. I think ill just donate this back of food to my friend who has a guinea pig. So much for trying to get them something yummy!

I think the pine cones contain phenols, which I think is the strong smelling stuff. They probably aren't really dangerous, just not proven to be safe. Don't feel bad about it.
If you pick out the pine cones and the pieces that contain molasses, then the other stuff is OK in small amounts.

I know I've probably asked you this before, but is it not practical to order stuff online, is there a better choice online?

Anything good I've found online is not in the US. So either they don't ship to the US or it would Cost me way too much

Yes I'm familiar with the oxbow foods. I really don't need another pellet though.. I'm looking for a mix of leaves/dried veggies/ flowers etc which the food I had bought had lots of, I just didn't realize there was so much that was bad for them. Like I said though, I already have a pellet that is made specifically for degus, so I don't think I need another type of pellet
