This is purely a question of curiosity as I don't have any other animals as all the animals I have previously had have died or been given away Do you know of any cases of degus who have gotten along with other species of animals? Do you have another animal which your degus get along with? I am thinking of getting a couple of guinea pigs or a budgie, so this may come in handy Thankyou xx

Well, in the wild Degu's are hunted by birds so I am not sure if Degus and Budgies (or any other bird for that matter) would mix well.. Guinea pigs are from the same family (Octodon) so would probably get on okay, and not mind each other. I wouldn't have them live together though as diets are different and etc. You could probably have "meetings" with them but I would watch closely as either could be uncomfortable. Degus are known to get on with Chinchillas quite well and are sometimes housed together - something I'm not terribly keen on due to different diets, active hours, etc. There's a neutral sort of relationship with my dog and degus. He has a sniff every so often and they have a sniff of him. Wouldn't like to introduce them properly though.. Similar story with my 3 ferrets and degus as they just acknowledge each other. I would never introduce them though, my ferrets eat mice and have eaten rat before. I trust my ferrets with all my heart but it's instinctual for them to kill rodents and the like. Ernie, one of the ferrets used to climb on a box to smell the degus through the bars.. much to Chewy dislike however - kept screaming at Ernie until I removed him from the side of the cage. Finn, my african pygmy hedgehog has never seen my degus and likely never will. They are shy and solitary, not forgetting they are a lump of spikes! Wouldnt mix well at all.

Thanks Whizz. I would never, ever house two different species together unless it was normal for them in the wild. I would love to get a chinchilla but, although I feel so bad for it, their life span is so long that I don't think I'd be able to keep up! I've heard of stories about dogs and guinea pigs getting on with degus, so I think one of them would be my best bet. Maybe not a dog, they are brilliant but they need so much attention I don't think I'll be good enough for one. How are hedgehogs as pets? Do they enjoy attention? Thanks xx

Our degus seem to know the difference between our two dogs. Ollie absolutely loves the degus, and when we have any of them out, he is trying to snuffle and lick them all over. Queenie however would like to treat them like a squeaky toy that can run, and they know that she is not to be trusted. When she is around the cage, they run to the bars and shriek at her. It's quite funny actually . . . though I'm sure the degu words they are using are NOT NICE. LOL!

My Degu boys have many free runs with our guinea pig girls. The boys climb all over and sometimes give a playful nibble and the pigs do the same back. ( obviously not climbing on the Degu lol) they seem to get on and enjoy being together. Because of the poor eyesight guinea pigs have they always look abit shocked or confused when my boys start running around and suddenly appear in front of them lol.

One of ours loves to come out. Se will sit on your neck snuggled up and kiss you lol. (lots of licking) the other one will only come out of her terms, usually she hides in her house and refuses to but once she out she's fine lol. Piggies are very friendly and again asocial animals so ours live in the house in the living room. They enjoy watching tv lol and playing with the cats aswell.

Lol we pretty much try to let every animal meet every other animal in my house. The cats have to be kept away from loose mice as they hav tried to carry them around in their mouths. ( I have never let them do this but when they have sniffed the mice in my hand indie cat likes to put her mouth round Drogo mouse so they aren't trusted together, plus that indie & her sister likes to sit on top of the mouse tank.
Also degu haven't met mice because they are both mles and not sure if degu would see them as a threat or not?
But other then tat all the animals get on with each other. Which imam really pleased at about.

Yup the only injury that has ever incurred is when my cat Brecon got in the pig cage top that was on the floor and the pigs chased her around and nibbled her tail. She was solo funny as she couldn't understand it and every time since if they run towards her she runs away. Lol
All our animals are brought up on the we do not eat family members rule like in stuart little lol.

A wonderful rule!!! I trust they don't have to wear tweed, though?

It depends entirely on what you want in a dog, how much you are willing to exercise it and how easily you want to be able to train it. Not to mention the size of your house/garden.
