I couldn't find anything here about monkey nuts although am sure I have read something at some time. Can they have them, I am assuming as peanuts are ok then the proper monkey nuts should be ok. How freely can they be given? Does it make a difference where you buy them, the ones we picked up at the supermarket say "ingredients - roasted nuts". Can you buy them fresh, dried, cooked etc. does it make a difference? If the nuts should be restricted can we eat the nuts and just give them the shells ;D or are the shells bad for them aswell?

We do give our goos a monkey nut occasionally, but it is rare - sort of once a month. They love peanuts, but we were told that the fat collects in their livers, and is harmful (particularly to pregnant females). They do seem to enjoy the shell just as much as the nut itself. But as've never heard if they are any better, we restrict all of it to the occasional treat.

My boys love their monkeys nuts and they fav is hazelnuts. They will go crazy for hazelnuts and fight and try to rip them out of my fingers lol. As sad before my boys get a hazelnut once every couple of weeks and apart from one week where they were naughty and managed to steal 3 in a week I generally keep them down because of the high fat levels in nuts.
Monkey nuts and hazelnuts are good for the Degus because chewing through the outside really helps their teeth.

what is the difference between a monkey nut and a peanut? when I looked them up, what I found said they were the same things. and any nut given to your goos should be a raw, unsalted, unflavored, unroasted nut. no human treatment other than to sell it to you. as long as the shells are also untreated in any way, they should be okay for them, however they may not appreciate getting just the shells--would you?

Monkey nuts and the outer casing of peanuts. Each monkey nut contains 2 peanuts usually. Most places sell peanuts out of the outer cases but Degu seem to love chewing through the outer cases to get to the inner peanuts just like hazelnuts. I find it really hard to fine hazelnuts in outer cases and not just the soft inside nut. Only time I seem to come across them is at Christmas when last year I stocked up on them Altho used last 2 today so have to try and hunt some more now.
Hope that helps explain diff between peanuts and monkey nuts.

I tend to think that if the shell is opened, then you should probably throw it out. Then again, if the nut is sound, you could just take it out of the shell and bag it and freeze it.

Apparently they are ripe when they fall off the tree, mid september onwards. I don't see why you couldn't let the goos try one now.
Have you tried them with hazel branches and twigs with leaves on, they can have loads of them.

I sat and ate a load of monkey nuts myself - when I walked passed their cage they all went mad trying to get at me. The smell must have been driving them crazy ;D
Lrak - you really need to give me directions to the hazel coppice, please. I promise not to steal all of them.
