Alright here is my problem ... I know the whole difference about tagetes species and calendula species (I have tagetes patula in my garden . Calendula is the one that is completely edible and Tagetes is still iffy (I've found references for both edible and not). However, I was looking at the bag of degu nature versele-laga food and now I'm confused again!! The picture on the bag looks identical to Tagetes patula including the shape of the leaves! Calendula species has different leaf shape. I'm not sure whether or not the picture is just wrong (ingridents say calendula is used). Any comments are welcome!!

Hmmm I think i'd be inclined to ask the manufacturer on that one, like you say it could just be a mistake with the picture. You'd think/hope the writing is accurate but the picture could just be 'artists interpretation'.

Probably confusion with the art department, but it's pretty inexcusable.

I'd actually like to know the difference myself. The things I've always known as marigolds seem to look like both names . . . as in there seems to be no difference. At least from what I've seen on the internet when I google both names. Are the calendula always yellow/orange, and the tagetes always have red on them? Are those marigolds on the picture of food?

This wikipedia page isn't bad en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MarigoldRed ones are tagetes but tagetes can be yellow or orange too, and tagetes have 'pinnate' leaves, small leaves off a stem, like in the pic on the bag. I think african marigolds (tagetes erecta) flowers look similar to a double calendula flower.

I sent the company a message so we'll see if they response. I'll let everyone know the answer!
