Hi everyone! I have some locust beans at home, and I was wondering whether they were safe for degus or not. I know to feed in moderation as treats, but I was reading the back of the packet and found that they aren't suitable for degus? this is strange, because I seem to remember that locust beans were safe, yet I can't find anything on the search, and people have said that they were in the jr farm food? I just want to be sure before I go out and feed them. Thanks

They are and they aren't! They have quite high sugar content, so a few mixed in with a big bag of food is OK, likewise the odd one if there aren't any already in their diet is OK. There are quite a few in big chunks in the Xtravital food, most people pick them out, even if you then feed some as treats in small pieces. Basically they are not a good food choice as they are too sugary, but the odd little piece won't do any harm unless you have a diabetic.

Oh, tht's interesting. I'd always assumed it was ok for them to have as it was part of the xtravital food packets. Maybe that's why they've reduced the amount you get in a packet these days. My goos absolutely adore them though. I tend to pick them out and cut them into tiny pieces to give as treats and make them last longer.
