Are anyone elses degus changing their mind over what they like lately? Now that I have an unlimited supply of leaves and greenery, they are less keen on them. They are also eating less hay, and less of everything, they don't get a lot of commercial food in their bowls in the morning, but they have gone from wolfing down every last crumb as fast as possible, to hiding and burying some now. They still beg shamelessly at every opportunity though Thinking back, their eating habbits were more like this last summer, so I'm not too concerned about it being a teeth issue.

Yup, snap molette! Glad its not just me, Dougal was really worrying me by doing this. The girls are eating as the food is put in but Dougal has been burrying quite a bit before he settles down to eat. I wonder if it is a response to the temperature increasing? I guess in the wild food would be more abundant as the weather improves and perhaps they're not so worried about cramming it in? Just a theory. I've not had Dougal a summer yet, perhaps this is his normal routine, like you i've observed him when he does eat and it isn't seeming to be an issue with teeth. He likes science select squares and those are super hard to crunch on!

I didn't think I had seen very much "hoarding" so didn't post on this . . . then last night it was time to clean the cages and LO AND BEHOLD!!! The amount of seeds buried in several different places literally had me shocked. LOL!! I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I've been thinking they are chowing down big time lately and thinking, good grief, where are they putting all that food they're eating??? Well . . . it's not on their hips, that for sure!!! It's been tucked away for a long future winter, if I would just leave the same substrate in for them to dig it out again. Guess I need to follow their example and start tucking food in around the house, rather than simply eating it. Maybe my hips will look more like theirs!!!! ;D

I thought I'd add to this and say that my degus are getting their ginormous appetites back for autumn. They are wolfing down every scrap of hard feed and much to my relief are eating more hay and greenery again Just my luck that they don't want to eat loads of vegetation while I have unlimited supplies growing outside through the summer *sigh*
