I’m so sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, but are normal egg cartons, toilet rolls and cardboard safe for them to chew or to be in their cage?

I have plenty of unused egg cartons which i use for other pets, and i thought it could be fun for them if i cut up some cartons as toys / enrichment to their cage.

Yes, they are all safe, just make sure there is no dirt or poo in the egg boxes, and I wouldn't bother ripping them up, the degus will enjoy doing that themselves. You can stuff toilet roll tubes with paper and treats and then fold the ends over and even hang them on strings.

Yes, mine love destroying cardboard too. If you have a carpet shop nearby, you can also ask if they have any tubes the don't want. They last longer, and can fit through them!
