Thiamin?? If you are just asking if apple twigs with leaves are OK, then yes, they are great. Try some fresh and other pieces will keep if you just leave them to dry. If they like it, it could be a really good resource for you

Has anyone tried any other more exotic woods? I Live abroad in the UAE and regularily use Neem, Buttonwood, Indian Almond, Geiger, Chaste Tree and Moringa for my Degu, Chinchillas and parrots. Never had any problem and they love it.

WOW!! That is great to hear! Thank you so much for sharing this. It is always excellent to hear of more woods that can be used, and have successfully been used with degus without any trouble.

Nope, the wood and leaves are perfectly safe, people have been using them for years on the continent. Degutopia is inaccurate/ out of date on this topic.

Can woods be treated with raw linseed oil? Reason I ask is that I've treated the external sections of bird net boxes with, not the opening hole or inside etc... Was thinking, the corners of the cage shelves which are wood could be treated with raw linseed oil, they wouldn't be able to chew as the edges of the wood would not be treated. Is this a possibility? I've had my Goobears about 6 months, the replaced wooden shelves in there cage is quite saturated with urine. Wondering whether the linseed oil would make a difference for cleaning etc...

I used linseed oil for one small shelf (it was beech glued wood, so something quite hard with short fibres), just because I wanted to know if it works. It took some time to dry and did not prevent pee to soak in.

Thanks for letting me know - saves the trouble! Good thing that kiln dried pine is cheap!

That's an interesting question and answer. You could also consider using melamine faced furniture board and edging all round with softwood, and then you only have to replace the edging and not the shelf base itself which is waterproof. See cage materials thread for more info deguworld.proboards.com/thread/17316/cage-materials...edited to say I see in the other thread you have done this for your cage base.

Is spruce wood OK? I have this for the shelves in my degus' cage, without any leaves or bark. They seem to leave it alone usually, so is this fine?

Yes, as long as it is kiln dried, which it normally is.

I think it is kiln dried, so that is all good. Thanks for your help!

Some time ago Davx posted that fresh spruce was offered to degus, chinchillas, rabbits and guinea pigs without problems. It is considered a good food in winter when there is little other stuff left. Some information about it in German: www.degupedia.de/wiki/index.php/Fichte. But so far I have no personal experience about it.
