I have a male degu whos only just hiting a year old soon and hes not well at all. ive come home tonight to find him not breathing properly and kinda squeaking with each breath, he's taking really quick short breaths and is stone cold and has worsened within the last couple of hours. im not really sure if he will last the night, im keeping him warm, i tried putting him in my jacket and he wasnt interested hed rather just sit on my laptop where at the time it was coder then inside my jacket. hes still alert but his walking is very off. the best way to describe it is as if hes drunk!! so he is very weak any ideas or suggestions would be really appriciated thanku xxxx

It sounds like he has had a very severe and frightful onset of a respiratory infection . . . one that may well bring about an untimely and thoroughly unexpected end. I am so sorry that you have this potential to face. You really need to get him warmed up, and you need to take him to your vet as quickly as you can. To warm him, put rice in an old sock and zap it in the microwave to warm it up, but not make it too hot, or carry him inside your shirt, or both. Do what you can to keep him warm. Also see if you can entice him to drink some, and to eat a bit of his favorite treats to give him some energy and strength to fight this thing.
Please tell us how you and he are doing, Loopyloolisa! I'll be thinking of you both!!

I'm thinking of you both as well. Hoping and praying that in your next post you'll say you've seen the vet and that your degu is being treated and on the road to recovery. Please keep us posted.

Unfortunetly my baby went this morning </3 it was very heart breaking. I was up untill 4am comforting him a making h as comfortable as i could. Unfortunetly i had no way of getting to the vets and as much as i would rather of had him pts as i knew he was going and there was no coming back as he deteriated very rapidly, what they charge at emergency vets is extrodinary, as i work in a place with a vets i was going to Go when i went to work but i woke at 8 to fid him just passed. He has left me a goodbye wound! He didnt want me to forget! And it hurts to think he was scared :-( When i tried to warm him up he got very stressed and i tried to syringe feed as well as giv a low dose of baytril (just so u know its experience with other small animals at work! I wouldnt mess with medicine ) but he wasnt having any of it He was less then a year old, im not sure if it was nerve damage or a stroke? He wouldnt settle and towards the end he kept rolling? My concern now is one of his girlies who is missing him loads. They were inseperable and as expected is grievin but shes bot intrested in coming for a treat of being picked up n shes just sitting on her own. Do i let her have time to herself for a few days or continue trying to give her loads of attention and cuddles cos i dont want to stress her but dint want her to feel alone! Thanks or ur caribf words RIP Sprite play hard at the bridge x

I didnt want that to come across i didnt want to take him to the vet! I dont drive and noone was available. I phoned the vet for queries and it would have cost me £80 just to see a vet and £140 to put to sleep. Having paid out £200 for my dogs castration i was certainly low on the vet funds account! I know theyre emergency and unsocial hours but why do they have to charge sl much? It hurts me to think i couldnt do anything for Sprite n that he went in a painful way but i gave him as much love and comfort i could. I just wanted his last few hours to cuddled n loved by his mumm who knew this was goodbye x

I am so sorry, love!! He sounded very ill indeed, but I was truly hoping that he would turn a different corner and begin the road to health for you. I am sorry about the bite, the sleepless night, the sorrowful discovery upon waking, and the very deep loss you and your other goos are now suffering. Wish I could reach through and give you a hug. My hearts mourns with you.

I'm sorry for your loss x He deteriorated so rapidly it's unlikely the vet could have done much to help, he sounded very poorly. Rest in peace Sprite xx
Perhaps you could offer his girl friend comfort but not force it on her, like just sitting with her?

My sincere condolences. (I agree that, with his passing so quickly, there was probably nothing a vet could have done anyway. At least he passed away naturally and in his own home.) My heart goes out to you and to your other goos. Together, you will help one another through this very sad time.

Thanku for ur kind words. He was a very special goo i fell in love with at work and adopted him and was my first one! Im glad i put 4 others with him as they can comfort each other. Lil goo seems to b doing alot better. Today is clean out day so ive revamped the cage with new toys and changed it all around to keep them exploring! And she came and took her monkey nut treat! So hopedully thats a sign shes moving on :-). Its a shame ill never know what was wrong with Sprite but i agree that vets prob wpuldnt have helped as i last checked them monday evening and was out tuea and by wed eve he was in that state so very rapid indeed! May have been painful but went knowing mummy loved him lots and always will :-) xx
