Hi there! I just recently brought home my first ever pair of degus! Their names are Atlas and P-body and after only being here for a couple of days they are brave, bold and friendly! They have two people (me and my boyfriend) to take good care of them and we're both really taken with them and excited to have finally been able to get them. I'm a lifelong animal lover, having grown up with a dog and currently housing two dogs, two budgies and now two degus! I'm sure I'll have lots and lots of question as I learn more about my degus' specific needs, so it's great that this forum is here for me to talk to. I'm sure my boys will benefit greatly. I'm hoping to have a video online soon which shows just how friendly they are, considering they were brought home on Sunday at dinnertime and it's now Tuesday evening. I've not even been giving them rewards for coming over to me, yet, since I have only had a chance to buy some veg for them to try and tomorrow will be my first chance to go and get some rolled oats and natural puffed rice as treats. I'm also going to cook them some treats using a recipe I found on another site! Exciting! I'm really, really impressed with how friendly and happy they seem to be in their new home. Right now I can hear them warbling at each other and watching them play, run in their wheel together and groom each other is just wonderful. Here's hoping for many wonderful years with these cheeky little animals!

Welcome to the forum, DRattmann! It is lovely to meet you and to hear of your new little loves. They certainly are cheeky, and so full of mischief!! You may find that there is a steep learning curve with degus, as they are quite different from what most people tend to expect of them, and they are just so BIG in personality. I look forward to getting to know you here, and invite you to read all that you can, and ask all the questions that arise. No question is too weird or stupid when it comes to degus, they do WEIRD stuff and we expect to hear strange questions. In fact, most of them we have asked ourselves at some point in time!!
Welcome to the world of loving and caring for degus!

Thanks! I can tell it definitely will be. They've only been here a few days so they've (as of this morning) eaten a grand total of three breakfasts here and already their routine is so set! I normally open the top door of the cage - it has three - and they run up the bars at the front and split off to their separate bowls. One on the top big platform and one on the next one down. Today, one of them got distracted by the fresh hay so he took longer to arrive, so I think the one who usually eats at the lower level got there first and was at the top.
The late comer (who I believe is the dominant one of the two) quite happily went to the lower bowl but the first guy was pretty agitated and wanted his bowl back. After several attempts at trying to take a piece and getting squeaked at, he finally went over and took his brother on and reclaimed his bowl. I had to very quickly make him (the guy who just had his breakfast stolen!) realise there was another bowl upstairs otherwise there definitely would have been another scuffle!
