today after I finished an apple I gave the little stalky bit off the top to Eric and he wolfed it down in 2 seconds, I figured as Apple Wood is safe for them this would be fine as an occasional treat. Any opinions?

LOL!! I give mine to the goos all the time as well. They love them, and I figure it is an excellent little treat that will do no harm in any way. You know, not to high calorie, not fatty, not sweet, just perfect for a degu treat.

this seems like a really good way to get cost free treats since i eat lots of apples.
Just wondering though, we have 6 cherry trees so im summer have ALOT of cherries, are their stalks suitable too?

Everything on apple and cherry trees is safe for degus to eat, EXCEPT the fruit (inc stones & pips)!

I gave my goos a stalk each and they really seemed to like them! But looking at the way they destroy apple branches Im really not surprised! ;D

Sorry, I may have misunderstood - are apple pips suitable and or safe? I have a load of cooking apples to fix up tonight (mm apple pie or crumble) can I give the goos the left overs? ie the pips n stalks

I haven't given any parts of apple to my goo myself (I'm not a great apple eater) but I'd say definitely steer clear of the pips be ause they contain cyanide whcich isn't harmful to humans, but might be to a degu because they are so much smaller than us.

I found out Bob (our eldest goo) really liked cherry stalks a couple of weeks ago, when I was eating cherries and he went frantic, bounding all over me to get the stalk. Definitely a 10 on the treat scale! Will have to try apple stalks next!

Thanks - I will steer clear of the pips but might share a bit of stalk with them

What about the vine/stick part off of grapes? Same - suitable for a treat? Cherry season is over here and I don't eat a lot of apples.

Rhiannon is right, I meant avoid apple pips and cherry stones. I would try a piece of grape stalk and see what they think.
