Hi there!
My name is Tess, and I've been lurking the forum and its related sites for a while.
I have three degus, three guinea pigs, two dogs, a cat, and a hedgehog. Also, a husband!
I've loved degus since I saw my first one at a friend's family's pet shop at age 9, but since I've only ever rescued animals (based on my outlook on life)- I had to wait till could find one no one wanted anymore.
My first degu is Daewoo (named after the car), I got her last fall from someone who felt they couldn't handle her anymore. She had been living on her own since they decided she didn't get along with the degu with whom they originally got her from the store. She was living in a tiny, one level cage with them- and was very young. The other one was supposedly a male, so I can understand- puberty and all. Daewoo is about 1 1/2 now.
As soon as I got Daewoo, I started looking for friends for her! After much disappointment (found males, found ones in Canada that I never could touch base with the foster family, etc), I finally found some last month, when a nice lady a couple hours north of me answered my wanted ad on Craigslist. Her girls were 2 or 3 years old. They were super shy when we first brought them home, but have now warmed right up! They take snacks from my hand, and come to say 'hi' whenever I'm near the cage. My husband named one Degubah (a take on a certain Star Wars Planet), and I named the other Dayabar (a joke with a friend).
Currently Daewoo is in her old cage, on a bureau next to the cage that the two girls came in (a tall super pet cage, made for ferrets- I think).
We're working on building a 4 level (including floor level) wooden cage for them all. We'll start working slowly through the introduction process once they move in, though the girls have said quiet hellos through their bars.
Anyhow, thought I'd step out of the shadows and introduce myself and the gang.
