Okay well since I mainly use my phone's forum app to view this site, I have a hard time finding my way around. If it isn't too much to ask, could someone please link me to the different threads on the lists that have been made up? (for example, the safe plant and herb list, the safe wood list, safe food list etc) only if it's not too much to ask. Also a random question, I decided to get my boys a thing of walnuts to try since they've never had one before. I couldnt get the whole ones like I wanted but I bought plain walnut halves. How often can I give them as a treat and how much? Like once a month, 1 walnut half each? Or is that too much? Thanks so much everyone idk what id do without this site

One thing I have a question about.. I'm looking through the food list...and for the plants and flowers etc..does it matter whether the food is fresh...or cooked...or dried or anything? Or is that just the degu's preference??? Thanks =]

Fresh is great, dried is also very good but will have somewhat less nutritional value, nothing cooked.

I find it very confusing as to which plants and such that is okay to make up their daily feed. I'd like to start incorporating all these yummy things into their diet because I found some stuff on the list yesterday and I want to pick some up today

www.flickr.com/photos/nicoles2010/can you guys tell me if these foods are good? I don't know how to post individual pics anymore..sorry =S But I just bought a few things that seemed good..Can you tell me if they are? They consist of....thyme, natural sesame seeds, fresh chives, flax seed, chamomile flowers, whole coriander seeds, and whole oregano. I also picked up their favorite..oats =] But if you follow that link, I have pictures of the stuff I bought on there. Any feedback would be great..and if the stuff I got is okay..how often can they have it? I'm looking to add to their daily diet. Hopefully I didn't buy all "treats"!

Out of those I think you can feed chives and chamomile flowers the most freely. Thyme and oregano are fine to sprinkle a bit on. Flax and sesame are both oil seeds, so feed fairly sparingly, flax is really good for shiny coat. Not sure about coriander seeds.
If you are looking for something you can feed quite a lot of, think greenery and non sugary veg. If you are looking in human food shops, things like salad leaves (not much iceberg type though), aubergine, zuchini, celery, brocolli, cauliflower are all good. You can also feed grains and seeds, look for things like millet, dari, amaranth, buckwheat, quinoa.
Do you have any foraging oportunities, or shops or online shops selling fancy hays and herbage?

I was looking for more dried stuff thats already made up. There's really no where for me to get anything here that I know of in pet stores. I got that stuff at a grocery store that had a hispanic food section. The only shops I see online that have nice food selections are all in the UK and I think it would cost me a ton to buy stuff online. And for it to be part of their main diet it would be extremely inconvenient to do it that way. I just don't know where to go and there's no one in my area to help me :S I live in south florida

How often can I give them as a treat and how much? Like once a month, 1 walnut half each? Or is that too much? I normally give whole nuts (something I understand is not possible at the moment in your case)... and not only once a month but around once a week. When I clean the cages I often find lots of nuts in there, at least in some groups. My degus do not eat them all at once (of course it is lots of energy that has to be used for opening them ) but hide them for bad or worse times. Whatever my degus understand by "worse times".

Try drying out the chives, mine won't eat them fresh, but they like them dried, they only take a few minutes in the oven to dry. If they liked the seeds, they'll probably like millet, which you can feed a bit more freely because it is low in protein and oil content. You can get it in human health shops and as bird seed. I don't know if this list of edible american plants is useful to you octodons.ch/index.php/Herbs

Thank you I'll try drying to chives. Once dried though, where do I store them and how long can I keep them for? And ive tried millet. They love it. Especially rocket. Can i give them a spray once a week?

Keep them in whatever suits humidity in your house. If it's a bit humid in Florida houses, seal them in tupperware or a ziplock bag, if not, you can keep them however you like, and they keep for months.
With the millet, I think the quantity you can feed depends on what else they get. I think a spray once a week sounds like quite a lot, it's not an unhealthy food, it just contains quite a lot of energy, so the more they eat of that, the less hay and leaves they will want to eat.
