Hello everyone! I'm Jordan, a rabbit owner from Manchester (UK), and am very interested in getting myself a couple of degus in the near future , to add to my furry family I'll probably have lots of questions to ask, so brace yourselves for that! Looking forward to 'meeting' you all! Love Jordan, Flixi and Gaga (the resident house bunnies) x

Nice to "meet" you Jordan. I have to say as a fairly new degu owner myself that you are in for a treat and a riot haha. They are absolutely wonderful little critters, I fell in instant love with them as soon as I saw them. I assume you've already done the necessary research needed (and as I found when I got mine home, there is a lot.. I'm still learning) But I absolutely love them sooo much. You'll have to show us your goos when you get them (if you get them ) If you have questions I've found that the members on here are very helpful if you are in need. You'll love it here, just as I have.

Hello Jordanrose, and welcome to the forum!! There is much to learn, so you can find the learning curve to be rather steep, but these little loves are well worth it! Have you read through many of the threads here? There is a lot of experience on here, as well as great information and advice. There are places to look that will give you a window on what degus are like and what you need to know about them. Have a look at the following: octodondegus.weebly.com/ten-steps-to-keeping-happier-and-healthier-degus.html A read through this whole site, not just the page I have directed you to, will give you very concise and up to date information that will dramatically help you with getting prepared. deguworld.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=behaviour&action=display&thread=5337 This is view points from owners and is very helpful as well. Please do feel free to ask any and all of your questions. As any of us can tell you, degus are rather weird and they do the unexpected. ;D So . . . don't shy away from asking a question because it seems too strange to be true. LOL!

Thank you for all the warm welcomes! ;D I'm doing the research first, before I take any steps to getting any new furry friends- I've read through the Degutopia site which gave me a great insight into these weird and wonderful creatures. I've also had a skim through the deguworld site, but will have a better look at some point. I've found a brilliant looking cage (John Hopwell), and have been enjoying looking through the forum so far- from experience, I've found that forums are the best way to get information, as it's from a pet owner's perspective. I'm on rabbit forums and have found them invaluable! From what I've read, they're quite similar to bunnies (mainly in terms of diet and play), so hopefully I'd find Degu ownership relatively easy in that respect

Hey,
I am new to degus too (owner for 6 months) but am a bunny fanatic too (I have 12 all in doors).
Having had bunnies, guinea pigs and hamsters for many years I have found having degus a huge learning experience. Although I researched degus before adopting my 2 girls I found them hugely different from what I expected!
The noises they make are so different. I am so used to noises meaning negative things (well apart from a hungry guinea pig) that I still find it hard not to worry when they sit chirping away or making some other odd noise.
I also don't think you can ever understand just how destructive they can be until you have one! I would definately say they are not an animal for a room where anyone sleeps.
If you have any DIY skills I would definately recommend the make your own cage route. We bought a cage that was "acceptable" but within days of having them we knew we needed to upgrade. This had nothing to do with the missing wallpaper we discovered behind their mesh cage!
;-)
This forum is a great place for info and help.

Hi Jordan and welcome, there's no need to be shy I know I would say this, but i really urge you to have a look at our recommended cage sizes deguworld.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Cage&action=display&thread=9396You will find quite a difference between our recommendations and degutopia. John Hopewell makes very good quality cages, but they are mostly smaller than our recommended sizes. Ask away if you would like help choosing, modifying or making a cage, or anything else for that matter
