have tried to open the mouth of one of my other ones but he won't have it! the vet told me to try and get him to drink a bit of warm water, so i have a syringe (without needle) but he squeaked a bit when i put a drop at the side of his mouth ... what could it be ..

OH NO!! Tzr, I am so, so sorry! What a terrible day for you. I feel terrible that I was not here to help, and that you have lost him. It sounds like he may have had over grown teeth, or a swollen tongue possibly from his teeth cutting into them? I am very sorry for your loss, hon!! My thoughts are with you!!

So sorry to read about Toffee Unfortunately you will only be able to guess what the problem may have been, the only sure way would have been a Post Mortem. If the mouth was swollen then it could have been a tooth issue, allergy to something? Was he OK beforehand or was he ruffled, off his food or anything unusual for him? The problem with Degus is that they are masters at hiding health problems and go downhill very quickly as you know. Children are funny really, When we have lost animals in the past, I am the one who is upset and they carry on as if nothing has really happened. They manage to get over things quicker than we do in some cases.

I'm very sorry about Toffee x Keep a close eye on the others for any change in eating or chewing habits, or weight loss.
