So I've recently switched my boys over to JRF Chin Mix and Versele Laga Crispy. They all seem to be going down well...except...this is Dave's food bowl at the end of 2 bowl fulls (over a few days)... moletteuk Will your girls not eat these nugget things either..?

Yeah, those are the pieces my lot look at with scorn. It's really a bummer because I think those are the grass pellets.

Is there something we can try and substitute them with? Or would hay be good enough, Dave really enjoys hay and will sometimes eat that over 'proper' food. Stan & Nige seem happy enough to eat them. They do tend to leave them until last, but they do get eaten...if I starve them long enough

Oh, that's more encouraging if Stan & Nige will eat them Yes, hay and fresh and dried plants make them less important.

I thought I would drop an image up of the JR Farm Food Degu Adult for others to see. Mine arrived a couple of days ago, and I am very impressed, it is a bit on the pricey side, but it smells fresh and my goos have certainly taken a liking to it. It appears low in seeds so I will do my usual and add in a bit of seed mix now and again. My experience with other foods is that the nuggets always seem to get left until the end, but the degus are going for them first every time and even our fussy degu Alfie is chomping them down..you can see the light brown ones in the photo and there are also some green donut shaped ones. From the noise they are making when eating them I also think they may be good teeth grinding material!!

Oh, that looks more appetising than I was anticipating. Have you seen the info on it in the new commercial food chart though? It has a Ca:P ratio of less than one, which is terrible. I wouldn't feed it without supplementing calcium. It's so low I think you would need to add an artificial calcium supplement powder to make enough impression on the levels, rather than just throwing in high calcium seeds or alfalfa.

Molette, did you manage to look at the grainless feed I'd shown you and gather any thoughts on it?

I did not realise that, I made the assumption that as a pre-made food it would be reasonably balanced..... ...at that price you would expect it to have everything!!!

Molette, did you manage to look at the grainless feed I'd shown you and gather any thoughts on it? Sorry Ntg, I kept forgetting about this. Yes, it looks OK in theory, v similar to the chin one but no rosehips and better calcium. I've always been wary of rabbit food because it can have coccidiostats in, which can be bad for degus according to degutopia. Not sure how likely it is to be in there, you could always contact them to ask, but it did take them a couple of weeks to get back to me.

I'll give them an email then, as it would be easier than sorting the chin mix out! I'm guessing the email will be on their website?

Just to say, my lot eat these cobs more willingly than they do the others in the mix! I have a group of weirdos apparently

I have found that whilst ours may not eat all of these at the first time of asking, if held back they seem to prefer them on occasion as treats...I think that makes my group of weirdos stranger than your group of weirdos!!

A mix of Versele Laga Crispy, JRF grainless Chin (with the apple & some rosehips removed and check they eat the grass pellets before you buy a big bag) and Pre Alpin would be my suggestion. You could still add in some Degu Adult to the mix for the variety of ingredients, but I wouldn't choose to feed that on its own.
I need to add a pic of the Pre Alpin to this thread, will try to do that soon.
