Hello,
I'm looking to buy a play pen however, there seems to be little on the market of large playpens that have under 1"x approx 5/6" bar spacing. My thoughts are that the boys would be able to slip through that easy, but I'd just like to make sure by asking wether it is too wide. I have seen some playpens but they are more like another cage than a playpen, I'd like to have a lot of surface area for them to stretch their legs. Personally I'd prefer to make a room degu proof but as I am in rented accomodation for 1 year I'm a bit concerned about them urinating on the carpet and chewing the skirting board.
If anyone has any suggestions on making a degu playpen please let me know.
Thanks, Kate.

I bought a small animal playpen here in the States and the Degu Girls do indeed fit through the holes! There is no base to the one I have either so you would have to place it on a throw rug or large towel to protect your rug. It's large enough for me to sit inside with them . I took them outside in it and spent most of our time trying to distract them from squeezing out of the play pen so I haven't even used it this past year. I too wish there was a playpen out there with smaller holes or mesh. Children's playpens tend to have the fabric mesh which is no challenge to the Degu's sharp teeth.
Probably best to let them loose in your bathroom with everything picked up that they could get under or behind. Some members have placed a towel in the bottom of their bathtub and let their Degus out in the tub for a run.
