This will be my only post on the thread since it seems somewhat futile. A single Thickets cage is OK on a temporary basis when you get them very young or if you have to separate them for some reason for a short period of time. A single Thickets cage is NOT SUITABLE as a permanent home for degus. It falls far short of what the RSPCA (and animal welfare associations of other countries) describe as the NEED of a pair of degus. Very clear and simple. I can't understand that we are even having this discussion!

I would not use a thickets cage and I would never recommend it on its own. I think they are too small for adults unless you double them up. I would personally suggest to anyone wanting one of those cages to take a look at John Hopewell first as his cages are the same style except they have better floors.
Degus need a lot of room for toys (mental stimulation) and back when I had a cage that size I struggled to fit enough stuff in it to keep them entertained whilst I was out and it caused an extreme amount of bar chewing.
I think they are great as temporary cages or pieces towards an extension but not a stand alone, long term, permanent cage. I am not going off of any figures I am going off of the behaviour of my degus and how it changed for the better (they seemed a lot happier) the larger their cage became. I think experience is the best thing for this thing not some random website statistic.
A human can survive in one room too but we all seem to like living in houses.
I am sure people will disagree but it's from my own experiences so I won't debate my opinion as my opinion is just that. I think keeping degus for their entire lives in one of those small cages is not adequate and that is basically the end of my opinion.

I have that cage, I got it with my girls. After a few months it was clear they'd outgrown it so I got a John hopewell cage to attach to it. I love the John hopewell cage, it's well made and well thought out. I could never get rid of the thickets cage however as my girls are so attached to it, they sleep in there and still spend a lot of time in that half of the cage. It's holding up ok too, we're a year on and in it's defence it's in pretty good nick. It's not good on it's own but as an 'annex' it's good. It's also going to be our holiday cage for the girls for a few days while they stay at degutopia as it's easier to transport. :-)

Great temporarily, but not as a permanent home (uness LOADS of time out of the cage). That's all I have to say

Not suitable for housing degus. The cage dimensions are much to small. For the price of that cage you could build something quite a bit larger out of wood.

Since my girls have grown I've realised the cage isn't really big enough. Until I finish building their new one it will have to do, and they will get their 60 minutes every day to run around the hallway.

When I got my first degu, adopted from PAH, I bought a thickets house cage for him. Very soon I realised that this was not big enough for him. I now have 2 degus in a stack of 3 linked PAH cages and feel that this is much better for them. I have also added an extra door to the middle section and plan to add them to the other sections too. I would argue that this cage for the same price is much more suitable, it has a solid base and is much bigger, I have modified mine a little to add an extra floor and ive had to wrap the plastic base in mesh to stop them from nibbling it but apart from that its a brilliant cage www.elitepet.co.uk/liberta-abode-cage-279-p.asp
