So basically im expecting some babies for those of you who havnt seen my post in the breeding section Which also means i will have to split up the boys and girls. Currently although I have enough money to keep my animals i am lacking in funds for another cage large enough for degus (obviously i dont want for them to be cramped) my idea is this; I have a rabbit hutch which is no longer in use, its one of the big two story ones and im thinking of converting that. It will be easy to put shelves etc. in for them to climb on as my dad makes furniture. I was just wondering if anybody has done this before and peoples general opinions on the idea... thanks ;D

What wood is the hutch made out of? Some woods are toxic to Degus. Great idea if it's a safe wood (there's a list of woods you can use on the forum) or alternatively, perhaps you could line the inside oof the hutch with kiln dried pine? I'm not sure about this though. There has be a thread on here about whether Degus can chew flat surfaces and it seems if the want to badly enough, they can.
