I give my Degu's hay and shredded tissue paper (either from the bathroom or the pet safe bedding you can buy) to line their nests with. Apparently newspapers don't print with toxic inks anymore so I don't see a problem with using newspaper. If you give your degu's toilet roll tubes you might find them ripping it up to line their nest with, mine enjoy destroying things for their bed. Making their own nest is also a brilliant way of enriching their lives.

Personally I still would be aprehensive of newspaper. There are lots of degu safe bedding materials on the market but as littlesqueek says toilet paper goes down a storm! I let my two have long sheets of it when they're out for a run and they love running around with it before going back to stash it in the nest. :-)

I've been using shredded office paper (printed) as bedding for years. It works perfectly fine and degus like it.

I use Finacard. Its shredded cardboard. Dont have to worry about the dust, no smell , and degus, chinchillas ratties and guinea pig all love it Its cheap and a big bale last me quite a while!

I've read that newspapers are safe for pet bedding now too. I thought office printed paper was unsafe though?

i would recommend finacard too, it's great, though more expensive than wood shavings. My mum was allergic to the wood shavings, hence the need to change. But finacard's very good...

Ive just started using Finacard and it's great. My partner is asthmatic and the wood pellets were making him ill (after they'd produced loads of dust by eating it and spitting it back out again!) but the Finacard doesn't effect him. It does seem expensive but they don't need a lot (espec when they use the hay for bedding aswell) and you get a hell of a lot for your money!
