How exactly would I fit a wooden level into a wire cage? It's a one level tall cage (I converted a tall ferret cage into one sutable for degus so it came with plastic shelves) and I want to make a whole top level (with a door way obv)
how exactly would I do this??? And once it's done how would I attach hammocs in the cage???

Using screws and washers. You can buy planks of kiln dried pine, cut them to the appropriate length, and then attach them through the bars, using the washers that a wide enough to span the bars and give you the bite you need to hold the plank snug against the bars. Take a good look at your cage and use your imagination to see where you could place the wooden levels such that you can increase the amount of horizontal space for the degus to use. I often think that much more than the three small levels can be put in, generally assuming that the manufacturer has put in the basic minimum for the price they are charging. You can be sure that your goos will be glad of it too. Also . . . if you can get planks of wood that are not your 2 inch X 6 inch sizing, but even a 2 x 8 or a 2 x 10, that will increase your space even more!

You can always buy ready-made shelves that come with all the washers, screws, etc. I bought some from ebay, if you put degu shelves in as a search.

I'll have a look at that. See what I can do. They have a plastic shelf in there at the moment that came with the cage, bit it's not sutable for them as they are constantly trying to nom on it lol

oww please remove the plastic it really isn't good for them, as they might ingest splinters which could tear their insides
