hi there, i bought a plastic wheel for my 4 degu's about a month ago. within 2 weeks the wheel had started making loads of noise whenever the degus would run in it (which turned out to be the plastic shaft wearing down and melting) so my boyfriend made a metal shaft and then just added it to the plastic wheel, for about 2 hours it made a different and then the noise of the shaft hitting the cage started... its been driving me absolutely mad ever since!! i looked up on google about different wheels you can get and the Leo Braun wheel kept cropping up and everyone seems to think that is really good... the problem is that when i type it into google it doesn't come up with any website where i can buy one from. does anyone know where i can buy one from?? or are there any wheels that you would recommend?

Hi poandcc Bad news I'm afraid, those wheels are not made anymore. Which country do you live in? If in the UK then there are several silent options. Firstly you can get a John Hopewell wheel. It's metal and has bearings in the shaft so it's quite silent. Only downside is it's quite expensive. But it will last. Secondly you can get a wooden wonderland wheel from Zooplus. I love this wheel, and it is unbelievably silent. Only downside is it is wooden and your degus might take a likeing to chewing it instead of running in it. Thirdly are the silent spinners, amazon sell them. For all three you want the 20cm diameter (largest size possible)

I have personally used the zooplus wheel, but after 6 months my degus decided to chew it to bits, as well as try to run at the same time! It was quite funny to watch them jump the gaps they made in the wheel (after which I quickly removed the wheel in case they hurt themselves). I now have a John Hopewell, but only because zooplus had run out of stock at the time and no idea as to when they were getting more, and I was getting desperate to find them a silent wheel.

i recieved my zooplus wheel today! they absolutely love it. The only problem with this wheel is that it is too small for them to run together which they love doing! =[ i go on holiday in a few weeks but after that i think i may buy them a john hopewell one as i have heard so many good reviews about the wheel! thank you all for your help x

Yeah, that is unfortunate with the zooplus wheel, but mine developed a fantastic system of alternately jumping in and out of the wheel. Even when I got the John Hopewell one they still did that for a while, until they realised they could run together.

well at the moment they are all still trying to get in it together! i have kept their old plastic horrible one in there for now until they get used to the zooplus one which means that if they do want to run together then they can! hopefully they will learn that they have to take turns otherwise i think there may be an accident as one of them span the whole way round the wheel yesterday because another one jumped in and started running whilst he was sitting in it

I think there is a thread around describing using the zooplus mechanism to make a metal wheel by attaching a dog bowl, if you are into a spot of DIY.

I bought my goos a plastic flying saucer type wheel, and they love it! Its silent, and made out of heavy duty plastic (the type they don't like to chew) It was a lot cheaper than some of the plastic wheels even! only downside is they need a chinchilla-sized one and theyre quite big and take up a lot of room in the cage
