Hi all, just after some ideas on what you have found the best to keep your degu entertained in and out of the cage.
When I go to bed or in the morning they are loud biting their metal cage door. I usually give them hay or the paper bedding and it keeps them happy. Sometimes a different toy.
When there out they just want to eat wallpaper!
Could I get them the drain pipes from b and q, wash them and let them use them when out? They are supervised so we would stop any chewing. Plus wouldn't been a cage toy but used in their room.
Any help appreciated. Want to keep our degus happy!!

You could get them but I would recommend carpet tubes. I get them for free from local carpet shops. Most of them are happy to cut them in half for you too. Quite a few people on here use them and you can have them in the cage. I make a couple of holes in the tube and bolt it to the cage mesh.

Good idea. Any other ideas for things to keep them entertained while there out so they don't eat wallpaper? Could I maybe get some wood and build them like a little bridge. They walk up and then have food on it? Want them to enjoy their time out

Thats good. I have a few branches from my mums apple tree that I have made a little climbing area with. I also have one of those bottle garden bottles on its side with sand in. I bury things in there for them to find.
Keep an eye out in your local charity shop I have found a few things in there. Just make sure that it's ok for degus first.

I am using rolls of bamboo edging (have one in the cage and two in the play area). In the play area I arrange them differently every time they get out. They use it for climbing, jumping, chewing. Below is a link to Wickes but I got mine from Poundtretcher at 4 pounds each. www.wickes.co.uk/bamboo-edging-roll/invt/187776/

Thanks fred. That looks like a very good idea also. Very cheap also which means if they dont like it I havent lost much.
How long have you used this? No reactions from degus?

The one in the cage has been there for the six weeks I have had my girls. They chew on it quite a bit but don't get anywhere because bamboo is so hard The bamboo is untreated; I have only soaked the rolls for a couple of hours in the tub and brushed them thoroughly.

I got a strawberry pot - you know a biggish terracotta pot with different openings up the sides. I put some sand in the bottom, they bath in it and hide stuff in it, and they love to perch on the top and the various levels. I got it from Homebase on one of their special offer weekends, it cost about £13 or so, but well worth it

When there out they just want to eat wallpaper! Yay, more degus who love to eat wallpaper. That is all mine want to do when they're out, just eat the wallpaper. I'm also going to try and construct a better play area for them as I can't afford for them to destroy the wallpaper. Oh, and the wall too. They love to chew the corners off! So great thread ;D

I bought some sort of tube duct thing off ebay for £6. I think it's for the back of washing machines etc. It stretches to around 20 foot. Unfortunately its not see-through but the little ones love it and you can bend it any way you want. Same idea as the ferret tubes only alot cheaper and it folds away to the size of a mug. Hope this helps x

I have seen those and have wondered about getting something like that myself! I think it sounds great!
