It is not quite finished yet. We only have one shelf in so far, but it was done enough for the girls to move in! My husband is not too happy with it and wants to build something "better" but I think it is great. (would have liked more mesh in front, but that was the width of the roll) That is just a piece of cardboard box for now, but they seem to like it. This is Nibbles, she's the active one. Chippy hasn't even tried to climb up there yet. She stays in the other cardboard box at the bottom. The top is mesh too and uses a simple latch to open and close.

We are working on the cage more today. Here are a few additions. They are getting a little house upstairs, too!

Ok, here is the "finished" product. (I'm sure I'll add more things and keep changing stuff) They won't touch that black wheel I got online, but they love the one I picked up at the pet store. They fight over it a bit. What do you think? Can you think of anything I need to add?

what a brilliant cage!!! i would love to build my own, but my landlord doesn't like caged animals, so when we have an inspection, i move them to the shed, its only for about 20 mins, but keeps her quiet x

You have done a great job so far On things to add i think it was smux that i read saying if you Degu can go from one point in the cage to the other without touching a toy or thing of interest then you need more things in there so i would add more toys and stuff for them to nose about in

Some "interesting features" at the bottom, rocks made out of papier mache (or made out of rock if you have access to interesting rocks and a car...although papier mache might be safer :-))

if you Degu can go from one point in the cage to the other without touching a toy or thing of interest then you need more things in there I disagree, I like to keep the base part of my cage mostly sparse for running. Running space is important. That cage is new, am sure there will be more added in time.

Digby, it is mostly plywood with some pine for the edge of the shelf and the box at the top. I moved the wheel onto the door today and she is loving that! I'll get a picture of that too lol. It is still new, I'm sure I'll be adding lots of fun things. Does anyone know about drift wood or coconuts found on the beach? I think they would look nice, but want to make sure they are safe.

Coconut shells are safe, driftwood isn't quite as easy unless you know the type of wood. The coconut meat inside the shell has to be removed, of course

I know Jordan uses driftwood I think, aslong as the beach itself is a nice one (not like some British ones that are awful) and as long as you oven it for a while it should be ok.

smux, you've got a thing about paper mache It's a cheap and simple way to make anything from furniture like rocks to houses or floors for the cage...why wouldn't I? :-P Granted I haven't yet actually done so...I said simple, but it's also time consuming because you have to let each layer dry for 24 hours

Paper mache sounds like my next fun job!
These two have taken to stripping the cardboard I put on the mesh up the top of the cage so maybe a paper mache playare with bumps and rocks etc would be good fun =D Maybe for the bottom as well but that has a deep layer of sawdust on top of the cardboard so maybe not...
Will also give me something to do =)

The last one really shows the size well, bigger than I first thought.

It is a nice size! It is 4x4x2 and it is nice and deep too. Goes all the way down to the floor. I could put the kid in there lol.

I think it looks fantastic! Maybe some tunnels could be added? The tube that carpeting is rolled onto is excellent for tunnels, and they are nice and large, so degus LOVE them. Most carpet sales places will let you take an empty tube for free.
