Hi
Unfortunatly due to an accident one of our degus got injured. We took her to the vets and luckily she has no broken bones but she has a very swollen face and has been prescibed metacam to bring down the swelling and for the pain.
Since bringing her back yesterday she has mainly been sleeping and I havent seen her drink anything or eat her nuggets. She has been eating hay and although she seems to be interested in the nuggets she cant chew them.
We couldnt give her the metacam last night as she got too distressed and I didnt want to give her the critical care food as I havent seen her drink.
Now I have just spoken to the vet and they want to hospitalise her until she is eating and drinking but I dont know what to do as we had seperated her from the others when this first happened and she became very upset. Should I hospitalise her and hope it doesnt take very long for her to pick up or keep observing her?

Hi, can I ask two questions first - are your vets familiar with degus and do you trust them? If the answer is yes I would definitely advise to have her hospitalised. It is very important that she gets her medicine and energy-rich food and that she doesn't dehydrate. The earlier you get her there the earlier she can be back, keeping the stress to a minimum.

Well luckily we didnt have to hospitalise her - one injection of fluids and metacam. Then today she began drinking and eating for herself so now we just need to get the facial swelling down and deal with her eye which she has drops for.
