Hey everyone!
I'm really sorry to jump straight into the health section without posting in the meet and greet and beginners areas. It's just I'm getting desperate for help now and it seems that even when it comes to vets there is nowhere to turn!
I am a new Degu owner and so far have had a rocky start to Degu ownership so would greatly appreciate any advice that any other owners can give me.
A breif explanation on how I've got here...
My partner and I fell in love with Degus when we were in Pets at Home one day buying treats for my budgie. I'd never seen or heard of them before but their interest in the people the other side of the cage was fantastic. Their little noses poked out at me and I couldn't help but do some research and planned to take them home!
A few nights later I returned and bought all the stuff that I'd need and created this:
Later that evening I went and picked up my two little boys Diego & Sid
Right... that was 3 months ago and I couldn't be more obsessed with them. They are the only pet that I could literally sit for hours and watch as they're so amusing and when they fall asleep together it's SO adorable. They each have their own personality and after a while you really get to know them which I love.
Anyway me and my fiance went on holiday and when we returned we were told that Sid had been taken to the vet and had been kept in for the last 3 nights!
I was told that he had ballooned and was barely moving and that if he wouldn't have lasted another few hours. The vets at Pets at Home took him in and were giving him medication. I returned from holiday and they finally let me take him home after he'd been there for 5 days. The vet couldn't actually explain to me what was wrong with him and just said he had lots of gas and that she had never seen it occur in a Degu, only a rabbit. His immune system took a knock and he also got an eye infection whilst at the vet. They said it may be due to them being given too many degu nuggets (as instructed on the back of their food) when I stated that the vet said "they are trying to sell their product" and was advised lots of hay and 1tsp per day each of nuggets.
I left there with a poorly Degu with a sticky eye that was sneezing occasionally. I also was given antibiotics, eye cream and a paste all to be given to him twice daily.
A week later, he stayed his regular size and got back to his usual self although his eye hadn't cleared up and he had started sneezing more frequently. I got given a stronger antibiotic to give him. The sneezing seems to have gotten better and his eye is now open, still a little gooey, but open nonetheless.
I finally felt like I had my little pair back again and after a small dominance struggle when they were reunited the first time, they were back to normal .
Then... Valentines evening we arrived home and my partner called me and said I had better take a look at them. They were both perfectly fine the previous day but now they were in the nesting box curled up together. I rustled the food bag (usually they leap at me when I do this) and I called out to them but nothing. At first I thought Sid had passed away and Diego was huddled up to him but then they were coaxed out.
I couldn't even look at them as they dragged themselves out of the box to the cage door. They BOTH were fully fluffed up (even around the face) with their eyes half shut. I couldn't help but burst into tears, it was really hard to see them struggle. My OH picked them up and they weren't even moving in his hand they were also freezing cold.
I rushed them to Pets at Home and told them I had no idea what was wrong and please take them (8pm! they were closed). They told me they couldn't guarantee anything. The next morning I rung and was told that they were okay although one seemed brighter than the other, they didn't tell me what the problem was.
At the end of the day when I called they said they didn't want to release them yet and they've had them another night.
That brings me to today...
I called this afternoon and have been told that Diego is fine and jumping around as usual but Sid's condition has worsened (I can't see how I wasn't told this yesterday) the small furries vet came on the phone and told me that he was still freezing and has had both of his eyes closed all day. She said it might be a genetic liver problem but how can this be if they both had identical symptoms and one is now fine!? They now have Sid on a heat pad and are giving him fluids but she told me not to have my hopes up as she doesn't think he'll make it.
I am heartbroken, as he has been poorly previously I've been looking after him with meds etc very closely and I'm really sad that he might not pull through.
The only thing I can't understand is what on earth is wrong with them and why can't they explain anything to me!?
Info you might need:
- I changed the bedding in the photo to Carefresh shortly after buying the Degus.
- I had them fed on a diet of Hay and 10g of Degu nuggets each daily with some rolled grass and the odd yoghurt drop as a treat on occasion. The vet then advised that this may be too much (trying to sell the product) and said a tsp each of the nuggets and just hay. So that is what I've been feeding them daily for the last 3 weeks.
- Only wood in the cage has been toys bought from P@H.
- Cage cleaned weekly and regular sandbaths (have held off on these for a while with Sid as don't want to get dust in his gooey eye).
I love these two to bits and I'm desperate to be the best owner I can be but it just seems that I'm being misguided. I have explained exactly how I've looked after them and know that I'm doing my best for them so please if anyone sees that I'm doing something wrong then let me know.
Can anyone shed any light on what's wrong with my Degu's or suggest anything I can ask the vet to help me? I'm really scared that I might only get one back .
Thanks so much if you've stuck through my essay!
Vicky.
