Hi I have just acquired 4 female degus, a mum, her sister and two daughters. they are definitely female. They are all very tame and have different personalities and fascinate me. I have read the bits about males squeaking continuously after they have mated but the other night the sister (Daisy) was squeaking continuously and jerking as though she had hiccups for about 20 minutes. She still fed from my hand but still kept being jumpy and squeaking. Any ideas (apart from saying she might be male!)?? Many thanks Richard

Hello, one of my girls dose it when she got spooked, scared or for any apparent reason in the middle of the night. She sometimes does it from her sleep. This is quite common and some people think it could be because of degu dreaming. So don't worry, if she was in pain or had any problems, you would recognize it. If you don't have them long she will need some time to settle down.
Welcome to the forum.

Thank you. I thought it might be the dreaming thing as she had only just got up (woken by the others going frantic for their pumpkin seed treat) They do seem really settled. they will all come out to take food and will let me stroke them and Daisy climbs up my hand and arm and over my legs. They have started grooming me back, a mixture of tickly nibbling, biting my nails and occasionally grooming me a tiny bit too hard but its worth it! I could watch them for hours (actually I do!!) The only panic I had was when Dinky (the smallest one) came out and jumped onto the floor. This was when i had only had them a day or two and I tried my best to coax her back. To my relief (and laughter), when I walked away from the cage, she just ran over and went back in!!. She then sat there laughing at me!!

I think Ady is right. Our boys when they were new to our home, and still young, this would happen with them once in a while as well. As they get used to things, this starts to become less . . . you may never hear it again, or it could happen a few times yet. Generally it isn't something to be worried about.
