This morning . . . I was up late working on understanding forum skins etc when I heard these very, very gentle warbles coming from the cage. Only, it sounded like EVERY degu in the cage were making them all at the same time. It was almost like listening to a choir singing in the most hushed of tones. It was beautiful. It only lasted about two minutes, and then it was quiet again. That was at about 2:30 am. About 20 minutes later, again the singing broke out, and it was just so lovely. I thought . . . I wonder what is going on in there?? I had finally decided that I was foolish to be staying up so late and must get to bed, so on my way I stopped to peek in the cage and see if I could determine the cause of the singing. I looked in, and EVERYONE was up on the topmost level, all cuddled up in a massive degu pile. It was a strange location for them to be, but I didn't spend much time thinking about it . . . especially when Snug, Peek, and Pumpkin all came running to a lower shelf to enquire about the possibility of a few sunflower seeds. LOL! Lights out, off to bed for me.
This morning my daughter came running in to our bedroom, my husband and I were still sleeping, having a bit of a lay in . . . but then again, it wasn't too late yet, only 7:30 . . . and broke the news that Apricot, our second female, has delivered her babies in the night. Having only been asleep for four hours, I was very groggy, said . . . YAY . . . and promptly went back to sleep. In my subconscious mind an understanding was dawning. Each time the degus sang as a group, a baby had been born!! What a beautiful welcome to this world!! My heart is so touched by this, and I am very thankful that I had the opportunity to hear it, and now to understand what was happening.
So . . . here are some pictures of the new arrivals, which also feature an older pup investigating what I am doing, while Mum gets in there to ensure that the nest is acceptable to her specifications. We have looked, and this litter of 6 contains 5 males and 1 female. She will be strong minded I bet. LOL!
The new pups . . .
A 20 day old in with the just less than 12 hour old pups . . . can also see Pumpkin, Aunt to pups, having a nosh to the left.
AND . . . just had to put this one in because it looks SO STRANGE!! Can you tell what is going on in this picture?
Apricot, heavily pregnant at the time, was resting on one of the shelves a couple of days back, when one of the (now) older pups climbed up on her back and then went to sleep in the strangest of positions. All four of it's feet are clutching the wall, against which Apricot was leaning, while it is laying it's full weight on Apricots back. My daughter called it a "Spiderman pose." LOL! When I look at it I get kind of a "something is NOT right with this picture" feeling . . . like when some kind of trick has been used to fool the observers eye. However, this is no trick . . . the pup did this on his own and both he and Apricot seemed quite comfortable with the arrangement. They stayed this way for more than 30 minutes.
