I just recently replaced their old dust bath and am now using that as the litter tray....after getting them used to their new dustbath they seem to be doing their business in the old dustbath which is good aha. Hasn't stopped their poop mess entirely but like you said about giving them freedom..i totally agree, the less restricted they are the happier they seem :] And the flinging bits out of the cage aha yes they do that a lot when they play fight :]

Yep. They always like to go where it already smells (or my lot seem to anyway). So just stick sum dirty bits in the container you'd like them to use - I also use an old dust bath as litter tray and leave some sand in it to help absorb anything.
I'm assuming you mean litter training for when they're out and about and not in the cage btw? Mine go where they like in the cage at the moment (everywhere!!!) but are good about using the litter tray when out - yuck! otherwise!

Inside and out. I don't mind where they go in the cage but if i can litter train them then ill try aha. They've been pretty good so far and are doing their business in the litter tray and it makes the cage look a bit tidier which is cool. Opinions Yay or nay to litter tray inside the cage? or should i leave it for outside the cage?

For poops ahaha it seems to be working so far :] they go there by their own accord which i'd rather ahaha if it doesn't fully work i will dismiss the idea rather than force it :]

oh right, my lot just seem to pebble dash their whole cage with poo, I wouldn't know where to start with training them. I might try training them to wee in certain areas, as they already have some preferred places.
