Anyone else had trouble with their goos chewing/scratching/digging up the carpet?!! Pepper is obsessed (and I mean obsessed!) with a particular corner of their play room and just won't leave it alone! I've covered it up with various items which are either moved (team effort, cheers daisy) or bitten to get to the hallowed corner carpet. I darednt tell my husband she's made a hole! Last night I put a box and a cardboard tube over it and you should have heard Pep, the whinges needed no translation, that was swearing in goo. She wanted in! They've got an entire room to themselves when they're out and oceans of things to play with but no, my carpet must be destroyed. I'm sure it's no good for her but she bats me away when I move her off it. If she wasn't so g.d gorgeous she'd be in proper trouble! Help? Or someone loan me some really big moths (no darling it wasn't the goo's, it was moths, big hungry moths) :-)

XP LMAO about the moths!!!
My two had the same obsession before I moved house. Is it a thick carpet by any chance? Or has something ever been spilt there? Either that or there is something that smells amazing to Pepper underneath it..... Or shes just obsessed!
Hope you suss it!

Lol. Thought I'd give you all a giggle. Carpet isn't thick but we've only lived here a year so maybe there's something really good there! If she was digging for gold I wouldn't mind but she is making a b-line for the floorboards! Maybe it's the lure of all the un-nibbled wood underneath? Sigh, goos.

You could always "spill" something there that she doesn't like the smell of...I can't remember if tea tree oil was the best option, but there's a few scents that degus will steer clear of...cat urine is probably one but you don't want to be known as the cat urine lady :-)

LOL at the whole thread!! There must be a scent that she just has to find the source of. Degus are "KNOWN" to be rather obscessive about things . . . well . . . at least among those who've owned them long enough. Do you have a large potted plant, or vase type thing that could just sit over the area and "decorate" the corner? Or is it located under a piece of furniture that is raised off the floor?

Lol! Cat urine lady!! I do have a cat...... The girls are pretty spoilt they have their own room so the only furniture in there is their cage. I did cover the corner to Peppers absolute disgust ( see above, swearing) but she's still after it, spends playtime working out how to move the object. She doesn't even care if I physically remove her from it which is odd as she isn't a fussy goo, she hates being handled! Maybe I will 'decorate' the corner tho, a slab of concrete perhaps?!! Dipped in cat wee. That'll do it. Lol. :-)

Oooh solved it! I put the dust bath there. Now instead of digging up the corner she's having a bath and digging up the sand. Why oh why didn't I think of that sooner?! Just had the loveliest play with the girls as the corner wasn't available I actually got a look in, yay! If she starts up again anywhere else I'm just gonna sprinkle sand there. :-)

LOL at this thread! - Glad to see you've solved it. Talking of obsessions my degu sheldon will run on his wheel as normal and all of a sudden start attacking the yellow plastic bit (the screw thing that fastens it to the cage in the centre of the wheel) spinning around chomping at it and then will spend 2 mins chattering angerily at it... then start running... and repeat he attacks it again! Luckily this is something that doesnt happen every time on the wheel maybe the odd time when hes feeling grumpy. Degus are very strange sometimes but thats why I love em lol xx

Me and my big mouth!! The OCD continues (obsessive corner disorder), she's left that corner alone and has moved onto the corner behind the cage! There's no stopping the little monkey now, sand be damned. Skirting board is now looking 'textured', carpet is looking 'textured' as well. Nuts.

i have exaxctly the same thing except its the perspex door - one edge on the over lap they will not stop chewing it. I think this is in protest to no wheel at the moment - ah that will be the 4th one on order due to the other three BEING EATEN TO DEATH !!!!! so now we dont have relaxing evenings watching telly cos you cant hear over the noise of the door knorring - and trust me ive moved everything under the sun infront of it but as its on a lap over cant put too much there otherwise cant open the door - thinking of removing the teeth - problem solved

Lol! It's the determination I can't get over, I cannot believe the weight of the objects they can move! smux round playpen?!! Ha ha that's just evil, but would be pretty hilarious to watch. I've decided pepper is nothing short of a criminal mastermind, blessed with the face of an angel. She looks so innocent but is really plotting world domination. Daisy is like her sidekick. I stand no chance.

LOL!! Oh the frustrations our degus cause!! Too funny . . . once you've stopped grinding your teeth and gnawing your lips that is. I tell you, once a thing is in their tiny little brains, it is hard to get it out! Harpic . . . maybe you need to find some hard metal edging that you can cap over the edge of the perspex . . . although not aluminium, as they can detroy that too. Blossom . . . well . . . I think either the round play pen or replacing (if she is damaging it that much) the carpet with tile flooring might be your only course. I wonder . . . are there any animal hynotists that could jiggle her brain a little . . . or maybe an "OCD patch" of some kind she could wear!

ROFL! Maybe you could staple some big sheets of cardboard to the floor, they might enjoy attacking the cardboard for long enough to forget the carpet, well, maybe 5 minutes.
You could try the bitter apple spray, although it didn't work on my fellas. If you wanted to try the tea tree, I would dilute it with something first, but I found that it didn't work for long, I think it evaporated off pretty quickly. My girls hate orange, but I don't know how you would apply it to a carpet.
Maybe you could persuade your husband that 'textured' is the new black?
