One of my degus called Taz makes a really strange sound whenever i go near the cage he seems to run to the closest point to where i'm standing and makes a sort of loud "werrr werrr" sound it does sound quite hostile or over excited but he doesn't bite and seems to like to be handled :S does this happen with your degus? can anybody give me some advice as i'm confused as to what this means. if it helps i can record the sound and let you hear it.
any help would be great thanks :]

"werr" doesn't sound to me like any sound...you could video it and put it on youtube. I am guessing though that it is more a defensive grr sound when you go near him, and this is a sound I have heard often with Gizmo and I've mentioned it here before...Quality is low, but you can hear the "growl" at the end of this video...

It's defensive, that's about all we know of the sound. It's kinda a "don't bug me!" sound, Gizmo does it when I try to tickle him sometimes although if I open the cage he'll happily come out and see me so it's like he just doesn't like being interacted with through the cage.

Mine often make that noise when another one is bugging them or trying to fight. I think of it as a 'Hey! Back off and leave me alone!' sort of gesture. Definitely defensive haha

He only seems to do it when he's in the cage, but always does it when he looks like he's trying to communicate in some way. i guess he's just being moody it's a funny sound...sounds like a broken car alarm...a very broken car alarm ahaha. Thanks for your answers.:]

My two boys do it to each other when they annoy each other or if they see the other one out the cage and ones still in they'll almost defend the boundries of the cage by making this noise and a loud squeek! I take it as grumpy too lol

That's the annoyed sound! Mine do it all the time when, say, one of them has a toy, or something in it's mouth and the other one goes near her. She'll do that growly sound as if to say, oi, back off! Sometimes accompinied by the ass shuffle (i.e. shuffling round so she's got her back to the one annoying her).
I'm no expert but from what I can gather that's basically a warning sound, so that the degu doing the noise is telling the other one not too come any closer if they value their health.
