Hi, my boyfriend and I have two lovely female degus called nosey and lashes (for 9 months now). 99% of the time they both get on well together..playing, grooming, snuggling etc. Recently lashes has seemed to develop a bit of an attitude towards her sister. If nosey comes to see lashes she will start making a whining noise at her...it's almost as if she is shouting at her and telling her to get away. We give both our degus equal love and attention and are wondering if there is any reason why lashes is beginning to behave like this? They make lots of little noises together like chitter chatter but this noise lashes makes is so different, she sounds really annoyed at her sister for no reason. Lashes would be a lot quieter than nosey in nature and we are trying to get her to come out of her shell a bit more, so if something is bothering her we want to help! If anyone has had any experience of this or can help in any way it would be greatly appreciated. Thanx

I'm pretty sure I know what noise you're talking about and without being 100% sure, I've always taken that noise as "back off".... kind of a warning. My degus make that noise when they want either me or each other to go away. This happens when I put treats in for them, when one of them is on the wheel and the other one wants it, or just in general over silly little things. I'd say it's completely normal and nothing to worry about unless lashes becomes aggressive.

Amie, my degus have never made that noise to me ;x but they do to each other, and this is normal, they're getting older... it's like teenage brothers or sisters, they have a tif now and again (in my case every 5 minutes but eh).

Hey, thanx for your replies! I'm glad your degus do it too so its pretty common. Suppose I should have known there would be mood swings with 2 girls living together lol. Thanx again

Yeah, mine make those noises as well to each other. Nutmeg does it all the time to her sister, and she has become a right bully to her sister as well. Bless her, poor cinnamon can't do anything right, she even shoves cinnamon out of the way for my attention. But, they've never properly fought, or even show signs of doing so (although the oats have almost caused WW3!).
