Yes I think cashews are OK, at least I didn't find anything to the contrary. Ist it possible to get cashews in their shell, and how hard are they? Ideally, with these energy-rich nuts, they should be made to work for their calories.

Thanks, this explains why I didn't find anything about it I wouldn't put it on a nut list then, because there are good alternatives with hard shells.

That's a good point.
Also wondered about pistachios... It's supposed to be safe for goos but wanted to check here as well.

For pistachios it's the same as for cashews.
I really find them only for getting energy into poorly degus.

No fred, please have a look at the german wikipedia (or eventually the english one is also suitable for that... I didn't check that): The shell is heated with steam or hot oil and toxic compounds are inactivated (its the same thing for peanuts). I ate so many of those nuts but I never had even one evoking irritations. The only thing negative is that they haven't any hard shell. Thus it is mainly high energy food. Other nuts are also good for other activities and skills than feeding, because the degus can do so many things with this stupid nuts, they can't open easily: transport them from A to B, digging a hole and hide them, excavating them, gnaw the shell on all the sides and "edges", fighting for them or stealing them from a mate, etc.

i am sure i had read that chestnut and almond was bad for degus. im happy to hear that theyre not as we have so many almond and chestnut trees here which brings me to ask... if theyre aloud the nut............would they be aloud the wood? if so, it would be fab! they would make some really good thick branches and at the moment im really struggling to find any suitable wood ive just brought a baby apple tree for them but it may be a few years before its big enough to prune *sigh*
