We've been watching Wanda act out of sorts all evening and we were thinking that tonight might be the night and we were right! She's only had one baby so far but I know there's more in there. ;D Her next is in a clear plastic house so we can watch everything and it's amazing to watch. Lacey had her babies at 11:00 PM and Wanda is doing the same thing.

OK, how many? ? We are so curious. Maybe just 2 LARGE pups? I thought lilly was pregnant so long that she was going to give birth to fully grown adults! She was the right size for it!

We have a small problem. I think I can see six live babies (hard to tell when they are in a pile) and one that looks like he's probably dead. He's about 3/4 the size of the others and when they were squirming around he was completely still. However, he's at the bottom of the degu pile. Wanda was out of the house for a moment but not long and she's not happy with me even touching the house. Can I handle the pups this early? I really need to get him out of there. The older babies (now 2 months) were NOT being nice at all. I've removed them from the cage for the time being. They were almost attacking Wanda. I'm just not sure what to do with them now?? Oy

Oh, My! OK, you shouldn't handle the babies, but you do need to check the little one and get him out of there if he isn't OK. If you need to move the other babies out of the way, it won't hurt them. I'm curious about the older babies. Do you think maybe they wanted to nurse? Laurie

They were jumping on her back and clawing into her as she was running around trying to get them off. It was not a good scene. I'll try to get that little on out of there but there is such a pile and frankly it makes me just a tad queazy.

Just do your best at trying to get him. Even if he is in there just a little longer, it's OK. Most of the time, I think the mother will separate it. But I think they try to hide it. If it isn't alive, it would be better to get it out now than to discover it later by surprise.
It will be OK, just stay calm and take deep breaths.
I hope someone will respond to let us know what's going on with the older babies. I never heard of anything like that!

Turns out we had two stillbirths. My youngest dd is very upset. I'm thankful my older dd isn't here because she would have been VERY upset. It hurts to think of two gone. She still has 6 live ones.

I'm sorry to hear that you lost 2. It's hard to see and have to take care of that. Unfortunately, I guess it happens often. I was surprised all of ours were OK. I even checked carefully when cleaning the cage the 1st time to make sure none was hidden anywhere. I'm sorry that I told you that it was alright to leave your older babies in during the birth. I never heard of any problems like that before. I hope everyone is OK. Our older pups were just so excited, and I know in the wild, they nest and help each other. Enjoy the 6 and we want pics!(ha ha, I rhymed!) Laurie

I figured that the older ones would be okay with the younger ones too. I'm really not sure what happened but now I'm not sure what too do. I have too many degus and no enough cages. I might try re-introducing the teenagers back in tomorrow if they stay calm.

Maybe the older ones were in shock! I know our Willy was when he first saw his 1st litter! I thought he was going to run right through the cage! Can the older ones see the little ones from where they are? Maybe they need to see them for a little bit first. I don't know. You will probably have a sense about what will happen when the time cames.
Good luck to you Laurie
