Sorry if this is the wrong place to post or something but I am really worried about this.
One of my Degu's died so I got two 6 week old babies to go with her, the shop said they are both female but I think one of them is male. The one I think is male is also really small he/she seems to be growing so much slower then the other one. I don't know if this is normal or not as I have never had little babies! I only got my first two in January and one got really ill and died so the last thing I want is one of these to be ill and I'm not really prepared for babies either.
Anyway my actual questions:
Is it normally hard to sex the babies when they are 8 weeks (thats how old they are now) old?
and if he does end up being male, at what age would he become fertile?
Thanks for the help!

No, it's not hard at all! There's a picture in the Question and Answers section of Degu World. And our vet told us that the males could become sexually mature as early as 8 weeks, so you should probably do it ASAP. www.myhomezone.co.uk/degus/faq.shtmlI don't know why one is smaller though -- all of our babies seem to be the same size. Good luck!

when mine had babies they all grew about the same size, it seems aparant that there is a problem with the male/female. I would recommend you take it to the vets. It is quite easy to sex the babies by comparing them with each other, it will be an obvious difference in the length between the anus and the sexual organs.

I have only had degus for a few months, but I have raised rabbits for years. Once in a while, you will find an exceptionally small baby in a rabbit litter, these babies are called peanuts. They are about half the size of their brothers and sisters, and rarely live to maturity. I don't know if it is the same with degus. I just had my first litter, and they were all realitively the same size.
Yes! It is very easy to sex baby degus. I sexed mine at three weeks of age. Like sazzle said, there is more room between the anus and sexual organs on a male, females are closer together.
Hope this helps!
