The other day i was cleaning out my degus cages. I put the babies in a box while i do this. Well, i was moving the box, and the bottom of the box has holes. One of my babies got their tail stuck and he lost the tip of his tail. I was almost in tears because i know that if they lose their tail it doesn't grow back. There was minimal blood, and the part of the tail that was lost healed up nicely. But please becareful where you put your babies when you change their cage. I learnt the hard way, and it could of been wrost. I will be getting a holding cage with a flat bottom because of this incident. I just thought i would share this experience.

A holding cage is a good idea. I use a much smaller carrying cage - one you would use to take them to the vets. Much safer. Dont' feel bad angeleyes, we've all made mistakes along the way. That baby will just have a shorter tail. I quit using a cardboard box for holding while I cleaned the cage because I couldn't keep track of all the babies - one or more was forever getting out of the box!
