You are all probably sick to death of me, but I have another question. Has everyone's expecting degus built a nest. I ask this because Lilly is SO close, but nobody is building a nest. I suppy all sorts of bedding, paper towel strips, newspaper strips, even pieces of soft material. They just cuddle up and sleep anywhere. Often, not even in the same place.

Brigit and Loki didn't build a nest either. In fact, even though after the little ones were born I gave them a nest box and a bunch of nest material, Brigit didn't bother building a nest until yesterday. It was in the middle of the tank instead of in the box, and she already messed it up so you can't tell there was ever a nest there.

I see it's a little late to respond but for others who's Degus are expecting. Mocha didn't build a nest until the last minute. Actually she piled up a lot of the nesting material in one of the cages corners to nestle down in. But she gave birth in the cardboard box I'd set up as a sleeping room. (not knowing Virgil was soon to be revealed as Mocha it never occurred to me I would ever need a nest box for babies!)

I've had a couple of degu litters and on their own, my girls haven't been great architects! Just like Ra's degus, a day or two before birth my degu mother-to-be also stockpiled some hay in a corner but gave birth and kept the pups under an arch and away from the feeble excuse for a nest for the first week. At the time of the first litter, when the father was still alive,he built a gigantic nest. I have one huge cage for the girls (7 of them) and they don't have any nests whereas my three cages with male degus all have huge nests. The boys are quite industrious. My in-home conclusion... the boys are bigger nest builders. Have fun watching the new family!
