hi, I sent a long waffle to the general board. My degus have babies. But she gave birth the day I was intending cleaning out her cage for the birth (I had see she was pregnant a week before). The nest box end of the cage stinks any idea when it would be ok to take out the box and give it a good clean up ? I clean out wet sawdust and abandoned veggies about once a week but the nest I check ever 2 or 3 wees only clearing it out if it has been used as a litter box. Then I will get another shoe box to replace the damp smelly one. Ok I am a coward I do not handle my pets we talk to each other I fee them through the mesh and occasionally i will put my hand in the cage so they can sniff it an stroke them with a finger. Tomtom and Rosey know their names and come to me when I call. They are out and playing 2 babies in the clean end of the cage. There is a rotastak box that Tomtom spent ages filling with bedding and getting ready for the nest (Rosy could not fit into it by the time I noticed her size.)

I would think it would be fine to change the nest box completely since the Degus are all out and about playing. You won't be disturbing any of them.

My degu had babies a week ago today and i cleaned out her cage. At first the babies were crying, but mama made a new nest and they are all fine now.
