okay well about a week ago we got 2 new females for our male to hang out with after the lost of his brother and now want to breed him. the new females are slightly skittish but will alow you to hold and stroke them. right now they are living in a 20 gallon aquarium that we bought for them. the aquarium bottom is lined with sawdust and hay(wich they enjoy borrowing through ;D) my first question is what do i do to get them to breed or make them want to breed. my male has seemed to have already mated with one of the females but how do i know if it where a successful pairing?

One of the websites Sunshinemeg used tohelp her build her goo website is called degu topia and that's really helpful for breeding and sexing! I had a confusing period of trying to sex Jack & Coke but that site helped me.
All I know about mating is that the males make a whistling noise after a succesful mate [they like everyone to know, as boys do] and if it's not succesful they make a whistling noise but it sounds a bit more disappointing I think!
Definitely take a look at that website. You should try and research into your goos background as well so you know about health so you don't breed any diseases into your goos pups!
Good luck!!

Can I just ask where you purchased/adopted your degus from? Its really not a good idea to breed pet store degus as the majority of the time the degus come from a mass producing farm where they are not breed for quality of health or temperament.

Hello Elisha, first of all, I share Buzz's concern about pet shop degus. Unfortunately, she is only too right about the lack of quality in pet shop animal (also inbreeding you will find ). But my bigger concern is: you got 2 females...are you aware of how many babies that will be in 6 month? Probably you know all that, but just to illustrate it a bit: in 3 month both of your girls could have 8 babies (up to 12 seems quite normal), making 16 babies. Females can conceive right after giving birth, meaning in six month from now, another 16 babies. Given you have taken the female babies out before they are sexually mature: a total of 32 babies. If you do not take the female babies out in time, and we assume only 50% of the babies are female: a total of 160 babies in 6 month from now.Do you have places for the babies already, or can you keep them if no one wants to take them? I prefer people who care about their pets breeding degus over pet shops, but please make sure you have room for all the babies to keep them in good conditions, because the last thing you want is them being sold off as snake food. Ok. enough reality-check for now! You probably will not know whether or not the female is pregnant until she gives birth. A small litter won't make her big. To prevent a flood of babies, I therefor suggest you take the females out after 6 to 8 weeks and wait for the babies. If they are sexually mature already, they will more than likely be pregnant. I wish you best of luck and lots of fun with the babies! ... please post pictures when they are born. Cheers, Heddy

I have to agree with Heddy and also say that if you had worked in rescue like me and seen the 1,000`s of animals who are dumped or distroyed each year you would never think of breeding. Good homes are very hard to find, and you only need to look on any Degu websites to read about ones needing homes. Have you ever thought that many of the ones in rescue shelters who cannot be rehomed end up being distroyed when their cages are needed for the next lot that come in. Please think again. If you care about these wonderful little pets then DO NOT BREED.

well i was only planing on breeding my male to the most social of the 2 females. my male came from my aunt who bred 2 degus she had gotten from 2 DIFFRENT breeders and the 2 females came from my aunts bf's Little girl im pretty sure she got them from a breeder too i don't know verry many ppl who want them right now but have loads of family members who would probly take a few i would be willing to keep them and am completly against crulty and wouldn't sell them to homes that i am unsure of i am already thinking of making a contract that the new owners will have to sign before purchasing 1 about if they are needing to sell it they bring it back to me. lol I am planing to check in on them in there new homes 1 a month ( i like doing it ;D) my biggest concern is that we moved and the ppl we bought the house from layed down rat poisoning so i can't let them run free
