Hi all! I joined a little while ago when I first got my breeding trio of degus. They have been together for almost 3 months now and the 2 females are looking really pregnant, and the male is still very small and scrawny. I weighed them all yesterday, the male is 150g (approx, cant remember exactly) and one of the females is 215g and the other 230g. I dont have any pictures yet but it really does seem to be all belly weight, does this sound about right? Can I expect babies soon?
Also unfortunately the male has developed a respiratory problem, he in on medication and the vet recommended splitting him from the girls, firstly because it would be easier to catch him and administer the medication if he was on his own on a smaller cage, also to monitor how much he is eating, drinking etc and also as the females may give birth soon he wont be able to make them pregnant again. He is in a smaller cage right next to the females, they can all still see eachother - I dont know if this makes things worse?
Since this split, and actually for a couple of days before, the females have become very grouchy, laying their ears back, showing teeth and squeaking loudly at me when I come near the cage. They dont bite or anything. I'd like to have the male neutered now and put them together again so he can help raise the babies. Does anyone have an idea of how much this will cost me and if its the right thing to do?
And, just one last thing! A few days ago my manager came to get me because she thought one of the females was about to give birth, she was laying on one of the shelves, seeming to be straining every so often, like she was trying to push babies out, while the other one was running around all over the place. Nothing came of this and both degus still seem pregnant and perfectly happy (apart from the squeaking). Anyone know what this may have been about?
Many thanks in advance!
