I would never have thought!! So glad you saw him/her out, or missing, and tracked him/her down so as to catch "it" and safely put back away. Such a tiny thing would be so hard to find! I bet that caused some heart pounding excitement you would rather have done without! What have you done to prevent a re-occurrence? Have you been able to do anything? Joe Sinclair has a great idea for stopping, or at least greatly reducing, the poo fling effect (PFE ) that could be of great help to keep in little explorers as well. If you look at his cage again, you will see the wire he has put in advantageous places. Are the babies climbing the sides of the cage? If they don't climb, maybe just the areas near resting surfaces for the goos would need to be reinforced with smaller grid wire mesh. Then again, there is always the "aquarium resort" as well. Good luck with your little adventurers. Now that one has done it, I expect the others will soon be attempting to follow suit.

I wrapped my cage in hardware cloth until the babies grew large enough to not squeeze through the bars. First time it happened I was up all night worrying I would lose a baby! Went right out the next day and bought hardware cloth (small mesh wire) wrapped the cage, attached with zip ties and cut out doors. Then had to fit each door with hardware cloth too. Was painstaking work, had to run a file over all the wire edges which became very sharp after cutting and fitting. It worked very well. In fact I left the hardware cloth in place well after it was needed until I got tired of cutting my hands on stray edges when cleaning the cage.

Time to do it again at least this time i have some small wire spare what acrorat gave to me with the children. ;D But I am not going to put it all over the girls cage but only the first level so hopefully they are not very good climbers until they are big enough not to fit through the 2cmx2cm cage wire. I think her litter will be here between Friday-and next Thursday coming.

Gotta put in my two bits here. I'm a Mom after all.
You know . . . we all started out as the wrinkled, pink, wailing things, and personally I think we all turned out rather lovely! We all had to start somewhere. LOL! I will give you that they are CHALLENGING, sometimes to the extreme! But I love mine to pieces, and a piece of advice given to me by a dear friend - pre-children - applies beautifully to the whole experience. He said, "The only thing worse than having kids . . . (long pause) . . . is NOT having kids." I laughed then . . . and I laugh still. There are days when I swear I go bald with pulling out my hair . . . but life without them . . . my dear precious little loves . . . it would be plain, lonely, boring, and I would be looking ahead to growing older without anyone to be there, coming behind me. (Making their own life, and loving me from where ever they have gone.)
OK . . . got a little sentimental there . . . hope you didn't gag too hard. LOL!

awww sweet, in many ways having a "pink one" would be better, it would crawl all over u and leave u with giant scratches everywhere from its claws, it would almost certainly be cheaper, and when u said to ur friends "i have a baby" they wouldnt look at you with that blank expression and come out with gems like "is that a type of dog"
just have to add i do love my degu babies more than anything and wouldnt swap them for a human one for all the tea in china!

I have just read this thread and panicked. But i read that someone used cd cases to seal off the edges. So as a last minute idea i have covered the wire at the bottom with cases until i can get something better. Also great thing is you can still see through.
