How do you tell a degu is pregnant? In another post I've mentioned that Coke has quite a podgy belly & is veryyyy grumpy, not as active as normal but still exercising and very affectionate.
Ideas?

weigh her every day to see if she is gaining masses of weight too quick. How long ago could a mating have occured?
I'm not too sure really and I guess if she starts nesting then you know for sure that babies are due shortly.

I don't have scales or anything to weigh her in :s In the "is she pregnant thread" the pictures of the goo looks similar to Coke in fatness anyway. She seemed quite slim & then she's suddenly podgy! Whereas Jack's still slim. She was last in contact with Punk & Rocket about a month ago, maybe less? When I give them toilet paper for extra bedding it's usually Jack that goes and makes the bed with it first, Coke usually doesn't get a look in! But Coke will go and nestle in it afterwards.

If shes ballooned in size over a month compared to Jack then she is probably pregnant, if so shes got two months then roughly before shes due? Maybe quiz a vet over the phone about it? I didn't think degus showed untill closer to the end but I must be wrong.
If she is pregnant is this bad news or good news to you?

Danielle used to make nests about a month before she gave birth when i look back. i just thought she did it because she was on her own she is far more loving now because she actually jumped onto my hands yesterday, I'm not so frightened of her biting me now. i got some digital scales from sainsburys for £10. they are very sensitive so they don't have to be on their for long to get a reading. i thing pregnant goos get very rounded tummies but that isn't till there is about a week left to go. I've read somewhere that if she sits still long enough you can see the babies moving. have they always made a nest?

I didn't think they showed much of bump until later on either :s I'm going to book another appointment at the vets & hope I don't get that guy again [don't get me wrong he was really nice, just didn't know about degus] and sort her runny nose out. I suppose it'd be a bit of both, I'd love to have the pitter patter of tiny goo feet, but depending on the size of the litter and how many of each sex I'd have to rehome them. I'd probably keep a girl or two with J&C and maybe see if a male could be introduced to P&R [Punk&Rocket's cage is smaller than Jack&Coke's]. It'll be heart breaking to see them go to other homes but we don't have the space for any more pets Jack's always been the chief bed maker, Coke will just sort it out to how she wants it when she's tired.

p.s I feel horrible if she is because I've been scooping her up quite a lot [she jumps up onto my hand as I do it] and i may have grabbed her a bit too rough last week when trying to get her back into her cage after play time you're not supposed to handle pregnant goos too much are you

hey lala, as you know I am almost positive Lola is the mom.
Well when she was pregnant, I didnt have scales either, but I did notice the difference between her and her sister. She was very large (a pic of her a month before birth, in topic "Lola's + Cookie's 4day old pups" in degus PIcs!
I dont think she had any misscarriges, and well I picked her up all the time when I wasnt sure. I mean I didnt grab her, but she would jump on my hand. and trust me when I say, I might have grabbed her a bit to hard too, exspecialy when she kept exscaping from her cage (she found a way to pick up the door on her cage! but now its all sloved! lol!)
so dont worry and trust your instincts, if you feel she is really pregnant then let her do what she wants on her own time.
Good Luck!, Angela
