i saw spots of blood dotted around the cage and realized one Bills front paws is bloody, it looks like he may have possibly lost a nail!, its stopped bleeding and he seems to be going about his business as usual - running in his wheel, scratching things and boxing with his brother etc, I'm thinking that it should heal ok but are there any precautions i can take to stop the risk of infection??

You can bathe them to make to make sure they don't get infected, but I'd always reccomend a trip to vets just to check things out. It might not be necessary though and I'm sure someone else will chime in with some more usefull advice soon!

One of my degus nails fell off a few days after a bad leg/foot injury. He didn't like to be bathed as his was really swollen anyway so it was too bad for me to touch but you should be able to if no injury provoked the nail to fall out. Just wipe it with a very mild salt solution (so warn water with a pinch of salt dissolved in will suffice) just to clear the wound. There should be no reason for any other concern it should heal on its own and not cause any lasting damage. If something happens which makes it appear worse, then immediately seek out a vet.
