I was just wondering, since my little guy still has some scabs under his fur from fighting with his bigger friend, is it safe to give him a sand bath? It seems like the sand would scratch/irritate those scabs...

Sand bathing is quite important for a degu mentally as well as keeping their fur nice. It eases stress. Maybe having them less frequent then the others at first and see how it goes. When Steve had a swollen/cut/injured leg, he still really enjoyed his sandbaths (even though he struggled bless) - I didn't have any problems back then.

I, too, would still give him access to the sand bath. Since the sands are sterile to begin with, if you can give him first go at a fresh batch of sand each time, there will be no increased risk of infection, and may in fact, help to keep infection away. Just as Emz has said, sand bathing has both physical and mental benefits for a degu, so he will be better off to have his sand bath than he will be if he is held back. It is significant, too, that his wounds are already scabbed over. If he had an open wound, or one that was only held together by stitches or glue, I would definitely encourage you to hold off on letting him bathe for a week, so that his flipping about didn't reopen the injury.

Thanks! I don't know if these guys have ever actually HAD a sandbath before, so I can't wait to try it for the first time. I've been holding off because of his scabs, but I'll probably go ahead with it tomorrow morning:)

@ nocas Degus can be given sandbaths daily or every few days. It provides them with lots of joy and keeps their fur nice and clean.

I'm waiting for two degus next week. I'm portuguese and in Portugal there aren't much information about degus. I've learned (and I'm still learning) a lots with this forum. I've built a cage using this forum ideas.

Yes, some people give their degus sandbaths every week, while others keep the sandbath in the cage all the time. Once a day for 30 minutes is a nice balance. I am glad to hear you were able to build a cage Dont be afraid to ask questions and keep us updated.
