Can degu's eat rosehips? I'm just not sure if they are sugary you see... don't wanna make em ill! They're just on apple twigs at present as a treat/variety.
Also, i'm going to be altering my cage setup so they can forage for food. Do i still provide some food in bowls or just let them dig?
thanks!

not sure about the rosehips, but some of the hay i get, does come with flower heads, but not sure what they are.
I also put food in my goo's cage, so they can forage, but still make sure their food bowl is always full xx

It would be nice if you gave them different food for foraging compared to their normal food, perhaps look on chinchillas2shop or in pets@home for some ideas...preferably something they can have in abundance or perhaps something as simple as a small handful of sunflower seeds scattered thinly around the hay (less if it's a small cage, of course).
Re rosehips, I have found many sites listing the vitamin benefits but none of them mention nutritional values although one site was selling supplement and said it was suitable for diabetics so that's the best you're going to get at the moment...it is a fruit though, so I would give in moderation if at all, and I would also wait for other people to confirm or deny for sure before actually giving any to them.

I've read on degutopia and on the chinchilla shop site that rosehips for degus are ok, but to be used as an occasional treat as they do have elevated sugar levels.

ahh thanks for that, I'll stick to the herbier stuff and maybe a few sunflower seeds then (though i thought sunflower seeds were pretty fatty?) i'm sure they'll have fun with whatever i put in, but i'll stick to their pellets in the bowl and as you say something a lil different for the digging

Sunflower seeds are 50% fat (well, oil, but you get the idea) but the odd one or two given to active degus will make little or no difference as they will burn off the excess with their activities...I tend to give mine anything up to 5 in a row when I give out treats although usually I tend to give them small ones so this isn't quite as bad as it sounds. Poundland/99p shops do a large bag of sunflower seeds and peanuts (separate bags, obviously) for bird feeding and these are perfect for degus too and last a long time (bought these bags two months ago and I had 15 degus at the time...still got most of both bags left :-))
