Hey everyone, My name is Stephanie and I recently adopted my first Degu. He's a six month old runt, and we called him Gus. He got picked on by every degu the original owner placed him with, so he prefers to be by himself in the company of people whenever he's awake. I belong to a Chinchilla forum (the Canadian Chinchilla Forum) and was directed here. I'm not knew to rodents (we have 4 species in our home right now). here's Gus

Bonjour Stephanie ! Welcome to the forum ! You will find this to be a very international community. While most of the members here are based in the UK, we have members in Canada, USA, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Norway, Czech Republic and Poland.
I am looking forward to hearing more about Gus and your own experiences with him. I hope you will be able to find him a companion(s) soon. Six months is very young, so I am positive Gus will eventually come to know another friendly degu.
If I am correct, you are in Ontario ? If so, you will be pleased to find several of our members living in your area.

Hello and welcome to the forum, Gus&MerlinsMom!! That's quite a handful to type, LOL! Might have to wittle you down to G&MM. It is wonderful to welcome another Canadian to the forum. Gradually we are getting a few more of us here. Although, being such a broad country, not many of us are very close to each other. Our international flavour is a lot of fun, and I have very much enjoyed the opportunity to interact, albeit only through reading and typing, with people from other cultures. I've learned a lot from all of them!! I love your photo of Gus. The colours are great, and boy does he look like mischief!! What a cutie!

Welcome Gus&MerlinsMom.
I'm in Ottawa. I adopted my first degus in June of this year from the Ottawa Humane Society. (I adopted 4 what were supposed to be 'females' and now have 16 degus...but that's another story.)
I have experience with gerbils and mice (as well as budgies and cats), adopting those that have been abandoned and providing them a loving forever home. What other rodents do you have in your home right now? (I assume you have Chinchillas.)

Hi!! You guys can call me Steph, I imagine that's loads easier lol OMG I can't imagine having 16 Gus is adjusting soooo well, out of all our adopted pets, he's easily the quickest to come round. He just loooooooves getting his ears scratched! And yes, we have a chinchilla, his name is Merlin, he's a rescue, we got him from a home that used to feed him rabbit food and never gave him a dust bath (it was a nightmare), but he's now the snuggliest little thing, here's a pic We also have a black bear hamster, he was our first pet, and the only one who isn't a rescue. He's also the best hamster in the world, and the smartest little thing A year ago tomorrow we adopted twin dwarf hamsters from a girl who had ended up with 60+, they are old and going downhill now (inbreeding) but at least they weren't snake food!! Aside from my puppy (well, old dog, but my puppy all the same), that is our rodent zoo lol

Stephanie, those are very lovely pets ! Spend some time to browse through the boards. You will find so much insight here. Here is an article that I am sure you will enjoy: octodondegus.weebly.com/ten-steps-to-keeping-happier-and-healthier-degus.htmlMany forum members have worked on the production of this beginner's guide to degus, in hopes of helping new owners sort out through all the information on the web. If you have questions, ask away ! We will do our best to answer them.
