Just wanted to say hi properly even although ive been browsing the forums for the last week or so ;D Its really good to find somewhere that has so much great information about goos, and its also nice to get to know other people who share a love of animals too. Sometimes i feel like i can go on a bit about my pets lol and my friends who arent really animal lovers must get a little fed up! So im really glad i found this site ;D Im 35 years old, live in a place called Loch Lomond in Scotland with my lovely hubby, Thelma and Louise our degus, Domino and Jet our rabbits and Sasha the bengal holy terr... cat lol. I lost my beautiful chinchilla 6 months ago, he was 6 years old and had terrible problems with his teeth. I adored him and still miss him like mad We got Thelma and Louise from P@H about 4 months ago. We were actually told by them that they were both male so up until 6 weeks ago they were called Ben and Jerry lol They have had their fair share of up's and downs so far, and from what i can see im one of the few people who have had to have a female degu neutered, but im glad to say it looks like it was well worth it, and everything is going to work out just fine. Im looking forward to being a degu owner for many years to come! ;D

Welcome to the forum! It is lovely to meet you. I am sorry for your loss of the chinchilla, it is so hard to lose and miss our pet companions. They mean so much to us. I'm glad things have taken such a happy turn with Thelma and Louise. Cheers!

oooh Loch Lomond eh? I am originally from Bearsden in Glasgow and spent many a summers day on the Bonny Bonny banks of Loch Lomond. Was only a stone's throw up to Balmaha :-)

how do you neuter a female, and why? or was it because you thought that she was male? Nice to meet ya! I got 2 male degus a couple of days ago, they're called pumpernickel and poppadom!

I assume it'd be to reduce aggression or to allow them to be housed with an uneutered male. Effectively you are spaying the female. Not sure on what the procedure is but I assume it'll be removing the ovaries and uterus or just the overies.

I got 2 male degus a couple of days ago, they're called pumpernickel and poppadom! nice to meet you too! ;D When we originally took Thelma to get neutered we did think she was male (her name was ben at that point lol) She had become extremely aggressive with us and her sister, was very territorial, ie constantly marking everything around her with little white drops of urine. It wasnt nice for us, or Louise (her sister) but most important to me was the fact it couldnt be very nice for Thelma either. She was like a woman on a mission, she was completely consumed with this hatred for everything and anything, and she seemed very unhappy and just permenantly looked stressed out. They day of the operation the vet phoned me to tell me we actually had a girl and not a boy. (pets at home assured us they were both male) He felt that because of just how bad she was, we should go ahead and get her spayed anyway as there werent many other options (and yep its taking out the ovaries) He said he thought her hormone levels were unusually high. Anyway i was a bit scared because i knew the risks involved, and that they are even worse for females. We decided that we should just go ahead and do it because she was getting worse by the day. Its now been nearly 8 weeks, and she's like a different degu ;D
