First I would like to say hello to everyone here on this first rate forum.
As I new member I would like to say thank you to everyone who has posted valuable newbie information on here, I have only had the kids since Monday (18th of August 2009) and I’m loving every minute of it. before joining here I spent few days researching Degus on this site to make sure I could provide them with a suitable home and the information provided has been invaluable ;D
I have read in a lot of posts that Pets at home is not well liked for their treatment of their stock for want of better word, however, I got my kids from the pets at home store in Horwich Bolton and considering the escape artist of the two, now christened Houdini, happily came out of the cage and sat on my hand only five hours after bringing them home they must have been doing something right; I expected it to take at least a week, I only put my hand in to add some fresh straw. Since then both Houdini and Nibbler, he likes fingers, happily come to the cage when I go near them and will climb out on to my hand, or shoulder if Houdini gets the chance.
My one concern with pets at home is that pets come in boxes!! I asked the girl who got them for me if they would be okay in the boxes and she said they would be fine, fortunately I was also buying a small hamster cage for Vet trips etc when I got everything else so I just put the boxed Goos in the small gage; It’s a good job I did less than two minutes after reaching the car Houdini was out. After having a good look around and out of the car window, he then released Nibbler who didn’t seem that concerned about being in the box anyway.
Unfortunately I bought a thickets house cage that I was advised to do by someone else, not pets at home, to buy only to realise later that is isn’t really big enough so I have now ordered the materials I need to extend it vertically. Once my materials arrive I plan to increase the height by adding two additional isolatable sections with a middle play section for the wheels and an upper section with lots of climbing activities. Once completed it should measure 92X46x150 that should suffice for them to sleep in and play during the night. Once this is complete I will be constructing a play room in the spare bedroom which is 215 x 210 x 220 I just need to ensure it is totally escape proof before they can be left to their own devices in this area, does anyone know if they will dig through a plasterboard wall if it is not clad in wire mesh?
Once the room is completed I will post some pics.
Can anyone tell me how long I should wait before introducing additional family members? I plan on keeping an all male clan, assuming pets at home have sold me two males , but don’t want to introduce new members too early as the Pecking order is now established and I expect introducing new members of a similar age would cause a little friction.
Also does anyone have any experience with Companion Care in the Horwich Bolton pets at Home? I haven’t found a Vet yet and would like to find one before I need one so I can asses if they have the appropriate knowledge to treat Goos.
I think that is probably enough for a first post, hope you are all having a great day.
Thanks
Dave.
