Hi all, I've just joined up as I became the proud owner of two female Degus - Mocha and Latte - on Monday What a fab birthday pressie they are! I'm Sarah and I live in Northampton. I also have guinea pigs, which are really supposed to be for my children, so I thought the Degus would be a much more appropriate pet for myself! They are already rather tame... not sure if this is "usual"? They feed out of my hand and are happy to be handled outside of the cage (albeit very fidgety!) They are about 3 or 4 months old. I have so many questions to ask - I am going to have a look around first and post in the appropriate places - just thought I would say "hi"! Sarah x

Hi there glad to have you aboard, this is a fab group and everyone is always willing to help if you get a problem. Its quite funny because my five rescued boys came from Northampton. Where did you get yours from? breeder, rescue of pet shop?. Love the names look forward to hearing all about how they settle over the next weeks.

Thanks for the hellos I got my two from the dreaded Pets at Home! I first went to the one in Northampton where they were very helpful and handled the Degus really nicely - they were obviously well looked after. Unfortunately one of the two degus they had had lost it's tail due to a customer sticking his/her fingers in the cage and pulling it's tail They wanted to sell them still at full price whilst telling us in the same breath that she is still nervous because of what happened and she may have some after effects from the trauma... and as these were going to be my first ever degus I didn't get them - as much as I wanted to take her home and "rescue" her along with her buddy I have no experience whatsoever - felt even more bad as a friend told me she is still there now So... we headed over to Milton Keynes where the staff were less helpful and useless at handling the degus! But we bought home two from there. What a nightmare it was getting them home!!! They gave me a usless cardboard box to put them in which they had chewed through before we'd even left the store! I must say I am thoroughly enjoying having them! They seem to be up to new tricks everyday and watching them get more and more tame is very exciting! Sarah x

hey everyone, firstly i work for pets at home and i am sorry for the way the northampton store tried to sell you the poor degu who had that accident, it should have been put into the rehoming centre we run. you were right not to buy them as they are clever enough to remember these things. secondly, does anybody know the correct terms for male and female degus? and also the correct adult weight? i have looked online and in books but i cant find it anywhere. x

Ummm . . . adult weight I think is anywhere between 200 mg and 300mg. I have NO idea what the scientific terms are for male and female degus.

From Degutopia the average weight :
Average weight when fully adult- 170-230 g
My girls usually hover round the 200-220 g
Couldnt find anything relating to schientific names for male and females. They were all referred to as males and females :-)

hey everyone, firstly i work for pets at home and i am sorry for the way the northampton store tried to sell you the poor degu who had that accident, it should have been put into the rehoming centre we run. That's very interesting. When Bon died, I bought Betty and Bebe to keep Boo company. They were by themselves in a cage as presumably they were the only females and the males were the huge furry lump with 6 littles faces peeking out in the cage above! Bebe had lost half her tail (healed very well) and I hesitated about getting her due to that, but thought that it was unlikely she'd be homed so got the two girls as I was able to spend 15 mins getting them out the cage and handling them to see what their personalities were like. They are both lovely little things and I'm so lucky with all 3 girls that they are friendly and happy. I do wonder whether I should have asked for a discount as I was buying less of a goo though ;-) Edited to add welcome Sproggles!
