I am looking to get 4 babies and I want to make the right choice of gender. I dont want to put them through the stress of neutering or breeding ,so dont want mixed group. Also which gender is more effectionate to humans? kind regards Nicola

That is a good question. I have 2 males and they are on the whole are affectionate. Around this time of year males do get fairly moody/protective etc as it is breeding season. Not sure if females are the same because do not have any experience with them.

thanks for reply I guess will see what female owners say about thei degus, they may not be different ,it may depend on where they are brought from. I breed Guinea pigs and used to rabbits as well generally the males are usually the effectionate ones, the females were bitters .

There was a post on here not so long ago (perhaps a couple of months or so ago) about the same topic which went into quite some depth about the difference between male and female behavior (you'll have to forgive us lot for being crude about what the males get upto somtimes.... lol). I can't find the thread at the moment, but I'll keep having a look for it as if nothing else, it'll probably make you laugh.
I think it was a smiliar title to this thread if any other members are better at searching than I am! lol.

Have a look through the adoption zone on here, in case you find someone close to you that is giving some away.

from my experience, the only big difference i found with females, over males, is if you want to introduce new goos. I;ve had a bigger success rate with males than females, and do find my boys are more loving then any of the girls, i have had xx

Yes they will fight every now and again (does not last long at all, seconds to a minute). And is not an everyday occurance. Anything worse and you would seperate them. Their first breeding season is usually the worst time for fights etc. Two Degu brothers will mount each other for dominance, again this is only every now and again. If they are used to each other then this will assist in making fights less common to a degree, as the submissive one usually knows to back off etc.

mine are all brothers and yea they fight, but it hasn't been anything major, just a bit of dominance fighting when we got them and 'bickering' every now and then over who got the biggest bit of almond slice!

I got girls for the reduced risk of serious fighting. But from reading around the forum I don't think there is a major difference between the sexes with degus, I don't think it's like hamsters, rats & mice where the girls are usually more active and boys are more laid back, at least I hadn't come across that until Nicky just mentioned it above!

I personally have boys. I don't know why I wanted boys, I just got them really! Boys fight sometimes, but this is simply to work out who is boss (I believe girls also do this, but not as much). Boys do have a tough patch, when they are going through puberty as they often get in moods and will fight a bit (I am going through this right now, sometimes I want to rip my hair out! But I love my boys forever!). From reading the forums, boys do not smell more than girls. I have boys and they don't smell at all! As I only have boys, I can only tell you about male behaviour. My boys are very affectionate and are quite active, but do love a good nap!
In my opinion, there isn't really any difference between behaviour with males and females, it's just what you prefer and what you can get!
